Personally if the horse wasn't ridiculously far away then i would want to see the horse a few times to make sure everything was right.
First viewing i would like to see everything done with the horse by the owner and help/join in part of it too. IMHO i feel i can get a good idea on the horse by watching. Seconding viewing i would want to do everything myself. Third viewing, Vetting lol if everything is going swimmingly.
Apart from that i can't really add to what others have put above, especially what Smudge has said about the owner/seller, there are some real bad eggs out there trying to sell horse.
Have fun and be careful.

Agree, on the first viewing I would want to see the owner/seller doing everything, catching, grooming, tacking up, riding first, etc.
I certainly wouldn't want to go and catch a strange horse myself.
If you're interested then go back a second time at least to see if your first impressions still count.

id definately agree with joto-ask them to bring the passport and confirm details, even ringing up past owner to confirm things.over cautious but it wouldve saved me 3k and lost confidence with sonky he was close so i pretty much went up most days just to bring him in from the field groom take him out in hand and pop him back in the field. if its doable i'd see them a few times

And, if not mentioned already, get the new horse vetted before parting with your money! xx
