My lad is microchipped and freezemarked but i'm terrified of what if!! I constantly watch any site that has a stolen section aswell as Horsewatch forum through tracing equines. This is also a link to an international horsewatch site www.netposse.com/

Thames Valley are very helpful - they marked all my tack - they rent fields not that far from mine either which helps to keep everyone involved.

Is there any information on horse thefts? What is the usual pattern of a theft for example? Are they moved up country to be sold at sales? Are there dealers who take them? Are the pinched to order? It might be useful to look at this as a method of helping to protect our horses. What are insurance companies doing to reduce this area of crime - or are they just paying out without thinking of how they can help?

I think insurance companies should insist on ALL horses over 12 months being freeze marked, it would benefit the owners, who get to keep their horse, the insurance companies who pay out less for theft and the horses could be identified if they got out. Obviously ponies like Exmoors and others who are branded would be the exception.

I have been writing to Insurance Companies for YEARS: why don't they insist on freezemarks etc - because the amount they pay out for horse theft is miniscule. I want Ifor Williams to take responsibility for the huge amount of trailers stolen - set up and run a website so every trailer can be checked for instance. But they won't. They are making millions from thefts. Insurers pay out, punter buys another one while IW rubs hands with glee!! Pattern of horse thefts? I've been asking Farmkey for stats on & off for years too and they can't provide them! I used to keep a spread sheet of which days of the week, what time (often people don't know when their horse go though) and what part of the country, which colour horses, sex ,height etc etc but I just don't have the time (or energy) to do it anymore. If there's anyone out there with time & expertise to set up one up, do please go for it! How to set up a HW group? Oh you just do it! Get friends together & get them to get more friends, Tell the police you need a HW group, and call a meeting. Done deal. There is a constitution somewhere, if anyone really does want more info, please let me know. I'll be interested to see how many people join/start groups as a result.

I could set up a website where people who have had horses stolen can fill out a form asking for basic details of the theft... if everyone could spread the word on the internet.

That's what Horsewatch & Stolen Horse Register are doing already Smudge. We need one central effective site to contain all the information so at the moment you can check Stolen Horse Register but currently Essex Horsewatch website www.essexhorsewatch.org.uk/is doing a better job of displaying stolen horse info. There is a Countryside Watch covering Cambs, Simonebull. You and anyone else in Cambs should contact Stefan Gedlow at sgidlowccw@tesco.net to join the scheme there, but also press for more police support for Horsewatch, They just do not recognise other groups so do not share info around the country. Who has joined their local HW Group since this thread started? I'd be really interested to know, and if not, why not.

No, I don't mean current ones... I mean a data capture type of thing where people who have had a horse stolen and its been recovered, or they've been paid out, or are still looking can enter the details in order to provide a picture of the most common patterns... it would be especially useful to get the info on horses that have been recovered - were they found in private homes that had bought them through dealers etc etc. Unless I am mistaken - I can't find anything like that, but I've not got a lot of time to look. I can't find a Staffordshire HW group?

Ok - I've been meaning to do it for years, but never had the spare cash. Sod it though - I'm booking my freezemarking now. WHich company is best to go with??
Also, RJ - do you know of a Suffolk HOrsewatch? When I had a foal attacked it was nigh on impossible to find one? If not, how does one go about setting one up??

Just checked, Suffolk doesn't have one, but they do have a police liason officer, maybe ask her info, she may help you set up a group for the area, and you can liase with her ? My horses live in Suffolk, but I am in Norfolk (on border !)

Norfolk has a group up & running - Danny & his wife run it as a commercial venture but are not out to make a fortune, just be able to provide a service. Anyone in Suffolk is welcome to join Norfolk or Essex - whichevers closest to you I guess, until Suffolk becomes more active - which means horse owners making their presence known to police with the problems Norfolk:Danny / Sue Cracknell Tel - 07798 635746 Email - horsewatch@tiscali.co.uk Website - www.farmwatchltd.co.ukEssex: www.essexhorswatch.org.uk Freezemarking - use Farmkey or Freezemark. Get quotes from both, and it will be cheaper/done sooner, if you can get a group of horses in the same place. It needs to be on the left shoulder ideally unless there is a good reason to do it elsewhere. Smudge, I would love to find out more about how/when/where stolen horses are recovered, but rarely get told any info. Don't know if anyone else gets feedback at all. Once one is found, we're off looking for the others so don't really have time to do the debrief. So if there is a way of collating and getting owners to provide info that would be brilliant. I am absolutely positive that prosecutions in connection with horse thefts are more or less non-existent. Sometimes police try, but they do not have any proof and cases don't proceed.
