I had this dilemma the other day. I love long boots. With my xmas money and mum said she would put to for birthday I tried on teh dubarry boots. My propblem is my calfs are huge. Would not mind somuch if it was just coz I am over weight, but this has always been a prob even when I was a size 10 !!! Went thru loads of different boots, the best fit was the Ariat boots that lace up the sides, but even then the velcrowould not fasten at the top.
So yet again I have got short boots and chaps. At leat the chaps expand to allow for my leg to swell (got a dodgy leg n hip), they look like boots, my feet are still warm in winter, and in summer can wear a lighter weight pair of chaps (instead of gaiters), so for me, it has to be short boots. Plus short boots can be cleansed and look good with a pair of jeans!

Very good query. I have the same problem with wide calfs. The other prob I have is that my leg length from foot to knee seems to be short. I would love to get some long boots that would be ok and last. Have some robinsons own that fit well/wide calf but the sole went and part of the inside material with it. So have cut the material half way up and placed old carpet to make a sole. STUPID! it works for now though.
I also have short jod boots and chaps for the summer when it is supposedly hot?
So if anyone does have an answer to this thread then it would be usefull to me too.

I have had this dlemma too for a long while. I have some ariat short boots with chaps which are fab for the summer for the yard and riding but in the winter are FREEZING a few days ago i bought some Mountain Horse Rimfrost 2 for riding and yard work. I have short calves so i always have a struggle finding long boots, they are amazing they have thermolite through the foot and leg and a fleece sole, steel shanked I have worn them everyday since they are the most comfortable boot I have ever worn. the calves come in narrow, regular and wide. as I am sure you know weather has been icy and muddy on yards and fields at the moment. I have tried wellies my ariats, hiking boots everything an dthese are the only boot that i have not slipped in they grip to the mud and Ice. I have an ID/Pacer 2 year old 16.3 gelding who likes to drag me and in these give me the extra grip to hold him back. Absolutely the best buy at 75.00 dont even need breaking in!

I nearly always wear short (jod) boots but have never bothered with chaps -not sure why people do. I find long boots feel restrictive around my ankle and not as comfortable but I do wear them sometimes (rubber ones) in the winter if I know I may be dismounting to go through a ford or deep mud on a hack or it is very cold. They are far too hot in summer and I always wear short boots then ( I imagine wearing chaps would be hot too) I do think I am unusual as most adult riders I know always wear long boots and I have to say when I was a child (yonks ago!) I always thought short boots for children and long boots for adults.....

Horseyhorsey I remember vividly when I was a child wearing jodhpur boots and jodhpurs and getting the most awful chafing all down the inside of my calves - I found the stirrup leathers would pinch my legs too and wish I'd been au fait with chaps then. All that time ago the only real choices were jod boots (almost always those square toed Lovesons!) or those incredibly inflexible vulcanised rubber boots that killed your ankles. Aaaah, happy days..............

Personally I like short boots with chaps. I have quite large feet, but am very short from knee to ankle so getting long boots to fit me is a nightmare. Also I find them restrictive around the ankle.

I had this same quandry last week too! In the end I went for (another) pair of my trusted Moutain Horse rider II boots and chaps. They are my third pair and so comfy and my thinking is that I can wear short boots with jeans and my padded waterproof trousers (also moutain horse and also much loved!) and with not having the slimmest of legs it's hard to fit these inside long boots.
I do have long WoofWear boots, with the velcro on the sides for on the yard but I find them too thick to ride in except for a quiet hack, I can't feel horsey.

I prefer short boots and chaps. Then I've the option of putting full chaps on if it's wet and/or cold, and as other people have said, they clean up and look good under jeans. I have a pair of MH Sportive Highs (I think that's what they're called) and I just don't find them as comfy as the ariat boot & chaps combo.

I much prefer riding in long boots. I find they give more ankle support which helps to keep your leg more stable. I wore short boots for years but since switching to long boots I wouldn't switch back. For those with a wide calf, the Mountain Horse wide fitting is quite generous.

Boots & chaps, i spent a small fortune on some Mountain Horse long boots, used them for a while, put them away for the winter in replace of my wellis, got them back out, wore them a few times and the zip broke Could get the zips fixed for £40 lol

I had that experience with my Equitech boots xsamx, but my Mountain Horse ones I've worn pretty much every day for 2 years and the zips are still working. I guess there are always some faulty ones around whoever the manufacturer.
