buntybits - I 'm sure you can find clips of trot and canter backwards on you tube. the High Schools do it - POrtugese, Cadre Noir, Spanish etc it comes from taking the Piaffe and then to go backwards. Can't show you myself - not got there yet- can do lateral work at walk backwards etc. OP I agree - be nice to her and try and make her feel that she is and can be great

I too was floored by the "trotting backwards!" Makes my three years with Malaga and only just got to sitting on his back look painfully slow but then it did take me a year to pluck up courage to ride Sarah-lee and she'd spent 3yrs at a trekking centre before I had her! ;D (Never seen an equine trotting backwards!)

jingle joys - we had the pleasure of going to see the 4 schools extravaganzain Paris where the head of the Portugese school did trot backwards and on a board so that you could also hear the measure of the cadence- very lovely. Trot and canter backwards are very slow and deliberateas they are difficult for the horse to do. Mind you my grumpy git of an old horse can do it at liberty in the field if another horse ticks him off enough!!

8-)Perhaps it's cos it's very "" far fetched"" that some of us would ever be able to do high kicks or learn to do the splits as 2nd nature. Especially me lol

Don't worry I am not going to change my attitude toward her, I doubt she will come and ride my pone again as we are not as close due to other reasons but was just wondering if a riding school would actually do this

A riding school I used to go to would do that sort of thing! The one time, I hadn't been riding very long, and i'd never jumped properly before, so they put a fence up, about 2'6, tied a knot in my reins, and got me to jump this fence with my arms out to the side!!

That was actually a very common excercise in riding schools when I was a youngster learning to ride (admittedly mane years ago and before insurance went mad). Generally it'd start with a treble of cross poles. It was an excellent excercise that taught me to jump using my seat and upper body balance and really feel the jump movement. As a result I don't have the tendency to "fold" too severely as many novice jumpers do nowadays. Trotting backwards is rather odd though - maybe she did rein back and exaggerated the pace slightly

Yeah, I bet it is a good exercise, but I had never jumped before, so it was a bit scary lol ;D Although somehow I did manage to do it, but immediately after I landed I just grabbed onto the reins again ;D

Echo most people, definitely tall tales, I've never heard of a riding school doing bareback at all, it isn't really the done thing with the BHS anyway is it? Just let her get on with it.
