horses do not 'try it on' they lose confidence in your ability to direct their decisions - where to put their feet, when to put their feet and how fast to put their feet.
you must gain your horse's confidence in either the round pen, on a lead line or in the stable. Only then will your problems riding start to get less of a problem!

her owner is unable to get to the yard had she has had an op on her spine and she might not even be able to ride again for at least 18 mths i think i will start by walking her out then long lineing her out then go for the saddle
i know it wont take a short time it somtime that needs to be worked on though

seems quite an interesting challenge. its increadably frustrating when they do the planting and spinning thing. She sounds quite green. I think this horse needs plenty of time spending with her, leading and basic ground work as others have suggested. in a nutshell horsey123 you will be educating the horse for your friend and i think its sensible to think about how much time you need to put in and if you are prepared to do it all for the love of it , ie at no monetry cost to your friend, . if the horse went to a proffesional for schooling I expect it would turn out quite expensive. just something to think about.
