Found these in Dylan's poo this morning: My friend thinks they're tapeworms...they came out alive...does this mean the wormer isn't effective? Or that it is? Will he need another dose of wormer? I was planning on putting him out in a paddock within Dolly's field tomorrow but if he's still kicking these out overnight, is it safe to do so (today's day 5 of the Panacur 5 day wormer). Thanks!

They look like tape worm. You need a specific chemical for tapeworm , either pyrantel or praziquantel. Equest Pramox contains bith moxidectin [ long lasting wormer which kills all sorts of worms but NOT tapeworm, and praziquantel which kills the tapeworm. it is allegedly kinder on the gut than the Panacur 5 day as it doesnt cause the worms to hatch/migrate into the gut and so cause lesions or ulcer type things.

Was the poo outside on soil - if so I'd say it's earth worm -

When I found them they were quite short and fat but when I scooped them up on the shovel, they got really long...eta yes they were outside on soil.

It really does look like earth worm and could easily have come up into the poo. Is your horse stabled for any time - if so examine what he passes when inside - happy new year:)!!

Thanks guys - I am now officially the yard weirdo having spent the best part of an hour last night poking every poo he'd done in the last 24 hours with a shovel trying to find more worms (and failed...couldn't find any wriggly things)

Looks like earthworms to me too. Tapeworms are white and flat with a segmented body. As their name suggests they look like a piece of tape but with a wiggle!
