Kandy
Keep your pecker up. She is a grand old age.
In the last 2 weeks I have had 2 of mine go down with a bug.
1) My New Forest mare (18yrs old) I found her lying down in the corner of the field looking very miserable,we got her up and got her into the stable. She too did not want her feeds. The vet thought she had caught a chill. After about 3 days she started to eat and now she is fine.
2) One of my Arabs (10 yrs old) He stopped eating did not want his feeds either. It was a couple of days before he started to eat again and one week down the line he is back to normal.
On both occasions we put it down to the cold weather the damp and frosty grass.
I added hot water to their feeds to warm it up and started them on Echinacea and Aleovera Gel to help their immune system.
If she is drinking well the you could give her sugar beet water.make the sugar beet up as normal but wetter then drain the water off add a bit of the soaked sugar beet to it and top up with warm water. It is amazing what you can put in it ie electrolytes etc.
Hope your girl gets over what ever she has had.

8-)Kandy, whatever happens now, you should only congratulate yourself for giving this old girl the sort of wonderful life that has enabled her to keep going all these years-----She must be one of the oldest horses in Britain ! I pray that she recovers and goes on to have a good 48th birthday party, but if she has to go to Rainbow Bridge for her own good, you will have absolutely NOTHING to reproach yourself for. love SS3 xxx

That's fantastic..... 47? is she the oldest horse in history? if she can't eat hay do you subsitute her bulk with something else? Hope she picks up with the anti-biotics and if not, she's had a grand life with a very caring person!! Hats off to you, Kandy!!

47 is a brilliant age - is she a Shettie by any chance (the only ones I've ever known come close to that age)? Everything crossed for her, you must be really worried. Nothing goes forever though and I do hope you have begun to accept that one day.........not this time though eh?

Hi, don't know if this is any help and a totaly different situation from yours, but when my Arab was ill and refused to eat for 4 days the vet gave him an injection to give him his appetite back, it worked within hours. Good luck, you have cared for her well to reach that ripe old age!!

Wow! what a fantastic age! I hope mine all live that long! How long haev you had her for? have you any photos? Sending good wishes xxxx Here is the old Gal this was taken when she was still 46 I think. I got her when she was 18 just as a hack and for occasional Jumping. Thought she might do me a couple of years. She done her last x country at the age of 32. So my couple of years has lasted 29years ;D Still not eating today . Vets been out with some antibiotic injections for us to give her lets hope they work quickly as I'm terrified with an empty stomach she will colic and that will take her from me.

The injection to enhance appetite, vitality etc is vitamin B12 I suspect. Has your vet tried this?
