Just thought i'd add some pictures of the Lord Mayors Parade. This year was the last year that Young and Co will pull the lord mayors coach and im sure you'll agree that the 'black shires of wandsworth' will be greatly missed. As im sure will Kevin the lord mayors coachman. the boys before getting dressed up nice and clean Almost there The Lord Mayors coachman, the postilian rider, the doorman and the 6 foot grooms The finished product Im sure you'll agree it all looks amazing! Shame their arnt any with the horses, will have a look see if i can find some from last year with all of them in the frame!!

Gorgeous stunning looking horses - and so amazingly immaculately turned out too. You are right, they will be missed.

What has really made my day is their hooves!! The farrier looking after those horses should give himself a proper pat on his back!! First time in a long time that I have seen pictures of Shires that don't have farrier-induced soup plates for hooves... just tidy and in-proportion ones!

I agree about the hooves - some of the ones we see at the shows are awful. Its an old "tradition" to have low slung heels and long flat toes. Was shocked when i saw a young shire with feet like it!

They are beautiful, and I'll bet it's a big job to clean the coach.... what do the horses do now?

no - youngs in wandsworth have shut up shop!
The horses will no longer be seen taking beer around wandsworth and will no longer be seen on the county circuit. And they most definately will not be seen again at such places as HOYS. They will leave a big hole in the heavy horse classes at some of the shows. A few years ago at Kent County the only 2 turnouts were Capespan and Youngs.
It wont be the same at the shows any more without the disco trailer!!

I was told by a couple of Shire and Clydesdale owners that these breeds (as young as yearlings) had to be shod to be shown, or you don't expect to get placed... I was disgusted. The light horse judges have finely come to terms that obsese animals in the show ring are not correct and I believe that the majority of judges now will place these types of animal down the line. Surely it's about time that the Heavy Horse world followed suit and looked at badly shod horses the same way? Have to say... looking at the above photos again, I am extremely jealous at how white those socks are! How did they do it?

bertie, through the summer months the horses were only exercised in an arena or stables so no chance of getting muddy. If you can piture the brewery yard in the middle of wandsworth one way system there wasnt a lot of grass!! For their winter let down they were put out to grass and left for a few months.
On the other hand the shires i have dealings with are out daily (more in winter than summer) and my friend uses oil and sulphar every few days - looks tres dirty on a daily basis but when it comes to shows all we use is washing up liquid and hot water then fill the feather with wood dust (cant for the life of me think of what its called now) that stays in until the class at which point its brushed out - legs are washed out like this before every class and poo piles are missed by millimetres!!
Jen what shows have you partied with them? we may have met!!

forgot to add that it is not uncommon for yearling heavies to be shod all round! Barbaric! Things have to change in the horses favour... it's nearly as bad as docking (and thank goodness that was outlawed)! Hell!! Even France no longer dock!! Laine - can you remember the quanitys of the sulfur to pig oil? Might be worth a try this winter.
