Thought I'd create this for introductions for endurance people. I have 3 horses, 2 are retired from endurance but still do hacking, schooling and pleasure rides. One is a 6 year old working his way towards advanced, he has one more 50k ride to do. I am organising the Worcester Way pleasure ride for E.G.B. on 4th September if anyone wants to come.

I'm not an endurance person at all (wouldn't have the time to achieve and maintain that kind of fitness, either for myself or my horses - all five of them!) however, I'm about to take one of my 5 year old Arabs to his (and my) first pleasure ride in Bramshill Forest on 18th September. (Was going to go to the Windsor Park ride, but in my ignorance, I had no idea how popular that ride was, so the ride was full before I even got round to completing the entry form!)
Anyway, if anyone happens to be going to Bramshill Forest - or has any tips/advice for a horse and rider both doing their first ever pleasure ride, I'd be pleased to hear from you.

Good luck Oranges, several people compete with Fells, don't think you have to have an Arab!

I haven't competed for 4 years, and haven't been to anything at all this year even to help - but I want to get involved again sometime. In a few months I should, in theory, have 4 to ride and get fit which, if nothing else, will test my endurance! I'm hoping Shefali and Shantih will start competing next year, everything permitting, so watch out for a very nervous rider on a very excited grey or chestnut Arab..... I'll be the one being totally terrified!

Bagpuss, I'm not too sure - Have you met Shantih or Shefali? The same, sweet, cuddly little Shefali who decided, for no reason at all, that she didn't want to go on the starvation patch yesterday so got her revenge by trying to take a chunk out of my leg Little rat bag! They are coming on - VERY slowly - but I think I need to get back to competing on something safe first to get my confidence back. Ash no longer qualifies as safe.... Not that she dreamt of cantering sideways and trying to ditch me for several miles on the Long Mynd recently I dread to think what she'd be like if I competed on her again! And to think I was thinking she may have to be retired from ridden work completely 4 years ago? I've been riding her out with a cob that used to do endurance and I swear they compare notes on what rides they used to do Maybe Rasheeka will be nice and quiet to take out..... Or maybe I should take up something safer like free fall parachuting?

Hi all
I have just started in endurance... did my first ever ride at cranborne chase on 31st July (and if Eric Jones ever sends me the piccy i'll post it). There wasn't a pleasure ride option, so we had to go straight in and enter a graded novice ride (33k).
I was a complete nervous wreck, but very abely crewed by an experienced endurance rider, so she organised me wonderfully when my mind went completley blank. I also rode with another experienced person ona novice horse.. so had a great time, and the high heart rate and sickness (Mine, not my horses!) went after a couple of miles!
Much to my surprise Mara, my mare, was not too phased by the whole thing and we ended up witha grade 1, so i was well chuffed.
I too didnt realise Windsor was so popular so missed out. I have entered a PR at Cranham (gloucs), but just right now Mara has a respiratory infection so my participation is doubtful.
Samwith the Arabs.. I have also entered Bramshill Forest... but the novice GR, not the pleasure ride. When we get the details we will have to check times.....
I'm also hoping to do a novice Gr at the red dragon festival.
MY mare, BTW is a 16h trakehner (with strong arab-influenced bloodlines), and we are competing barefoot
regards

I'd love to try some endurance but have never done so yet! I've done a pleasure ride on my black arab mare, but as she's in foal we've had to call it a day for much more than hacking My little arab stallion would love it though, want to try it next summer!

Hi Carol (Wilts)
Yes, I'd love to check times etc. I don't know anyone else who's going, so depending on how hectic the timings are, it would be nice to say hello (even if only quickly).
I'm panicking now though, because I bought the OS map of Bramshill Forest area today and - even though we don't yet know the route, it looks like part if is is almost definitely going to mean crossing the River Blackwater - and on the map there are several fords to choose from. Now, where I am is all hills and the only water Miri has ever seen is puddles - and he simply doesn't do puddles. So if it comes to even bigger amounts of water, God knows what will happen. I'll be riding alone, so I just pray that someone else will be close enough to hopefully provide a horse who we can follow across.
Oh and by the way, Miri is barefoot too.
Please stay in touch Carol, would love to meet up if we get the chance.
Sam

Hi Sam it would be good to meet.. even if only at the venue. Where are you based? I was worried about water too (not on this ride particularly, but generally) so I found a map of fords and went and did some practice. Take a look at www.wetroads.co.uk (or try vamp.idlers.org/~jaffa/ if that doesnt work). I had a go at the ford in Ramsbury (wilts) with the aid of a helpful local rider who just turned up when we were struggling, and by the time we had been through the two fords about 10 times, Mara thought this was excellent and soaked me to the skin by pawing the water. That is no guarantee of course that she will go through another. If you are near to me we could meet up and have a ford practice! Otherwise I am sure that there will be lots of people around to give you a lead (thats if there is a ford on the route!).. there were on my first ride (HA!!! speaking with the experience of one ride!)

Hi Carol,
Unfortunately I'm not near you. I'm in South Bucks.
And my big problem is lack of transport. My lorry is so old and will cost so much to plate it again that it's not worth it. It's been off the road for two years and used for nothing but hay storage. So I can't get anywhere without hiring or begging lifts. Transport's sorted for the Bramshill ride itself, but I'm not going to have a chance before then to take him anywhere where there's water. I'll just have to hope and pray.
I'm also praying that any road work will only be on minor roads, because I'm not very confident at all on the road.
This is getting worse and worse - anyone reading this will probably think I should even be considering doing this ride on my own. But, I might not have much confidence, but I've certainly got the determination to do this and Miri certainly needs to do something like this at this stage in his training.
I hope you're right and that there is someone round who can give me a lead.
Sam
