Went to the Christopher Bartle demo at YRC a couple of weeks ago. Just to let you know he rides all his young horses out with his reins bridged, and neck strap on one hand (though breast plaste is even better as it won't slip round. So if one of the best riders in the country thinks it is an excellent idea then it's fairly good for me.

Most of the eventer hack out with one. WFP competes with one. I have even persuaded my 14 year old to use one!
She does use a hunting breastplate (without the martingale bit) for PC and comp though so it's still cool

Failed Rodeo rider I can't really explain why but it does just help, what you say is very true if Dan descides he will do a PROPER buck I need a parachute not a neck strap!!
I don't know many horse that will just do a plain buck I have found that more often than not it results from a spook or when a horse whips round so this is when a neck strap gives you an advantage your hands remain the same.
The idea is that yes you can lean back on the strap and not the horse mouth - a lot of it may be psychological but as the strap poses no threat (that I have experienced anyway) why not have one anyway. A neck strap is better used on rearers for the above point so you don't pull the horse over and when you have a horse like mine who pairs bucking and rearing a neck strap is handy. Unfortunatly we are not all blessed with impecable balance although I wish I was! The strange thing I find is that when you have a long neck strap which you can lift up and carry like your reins it does remind me to sit up and back. PSYCHOLOGICAL

I think the balancing strap is a good idea, im not to keen on the idea of a stirrup leather! My horse wares a breast plate, woch has a useful strp 2 grab if need be!

i thought neckstraps where generally used for jumping rather than a bucking horse as per reasons that donna and others have stated!!!...
Anyway what ever works for you!!!

Failed rodeo rider... I don't see how you could get caught in/under a neckstrap as bucks are throwing upwards but more importantly I don't think anyone should ride a horse that would buck like a show (rodeo) horse, unless that's what they do (rodeo competitions). I don't use a neckstrap to stay on - i use my western saddle's horn - but I do use one when I ride bareback. In this case I usually ride with one hand and hold the neckstrap with the other!

Val (Toons&co) maybe my choice of name made my horse sound worse than he is! The biggest problem is sheer brute force, although his technique is very good it isn't quite in the true rodeo horse catagory I'm just genuinely puzzled about how a neck strap can make that much difference & I have a very real worry about getting caught up when I fall. I'm also not sure that I'd have time to go for a neck strap if he started bucking & think my hands would revert back to their dreadful buried in the mane position if I held a neck strap all the time.

I guess the name did make me picture you in a true rodeo position This said, have you ever seen cow-boys doing rodeos? They actually tie themselves to the horn with a rope (in a way that they can quickly release) and they don't break anything doing this. Can you see how it holds them in the saddle (for a few seconds)? That's pretty much how a neckstrap works. I agree that if you don't hold it at the time the buck happens, you must have pretty speedy reactions to be able to grab it tho (hence why I use the horn, which is really just behind my hands and easier to get to).

OP here. Thanks for all the advice. I tried a balance strap (well a drop noseband strap actually) at the weekend but found it too "close" to me by being actually on the saddle - if you see what I mean. Think I may try a neck strap though as that seems to be what you all advise.

I think I could make a fortune here by devising something along the lines of a "horn" to fit over an "ordinary" saddle to hang onto.

The only draw back with a neck strap is once you are used to one you will feel naked without it. Oh Lizzieb I have not yet read a truer statement on this site - I lived on my neckstrap while riding racehorses!!!! They are fantastic pieces of safety equipment!!!! If the bugger starts buckin, just stand up in your irons with neckstrap in hand and let it ride underneath you!!!!!!!!!!! lol It doesn't affect your hands at all, you learn to ride with it!!!!!! I just use the martingale strap and loop a couple of fingers in it like you.
