I would like to say how pleased I am after my first Combined Training event with my 6yo TBx mare. Unfortunately, I can't because the whole experience has left we thinking that our partnership is never going to work and that I am out of my depth with her. I am trying to take the positives of 'good' behaviour, ie no exploding, appearing calm, but it is very difficult when I feel that I am constantly battling with her. She consistently lacks impulsion: our Intro test felt like wading through treacle. She has a lovely, scopey jump when she does jump but is so reluctant to try. It is almost like she goes into mental shutdown. At one point, she would not even move, let alone trot / canter and jump. Today, completing a 60cm round of show jumps seems like an impossibilty. I am at my wits' end about what to do. 'Take her hunting' and 'give her a good wallop' is the main advice I am given: neither of which I want to do. I have tried to take things slowly and not over-face her and I think we have a good relationship generally but I am beginning to wonder if we are just not right for each other......

Have you had her checked to make sure she isn't lame, having teeth, back, health , tack fitting problems?

julia I've been having similar problems with my mare too. Have been advised to go right back to basics and groundwork, which I'm going to do once I can get my hands on Kelly Marks' Perfect Manners. In my recent experience, in which others have tried mine with crop/spurs, even if it was something I felt comfortable with (which it isn't), it might give her a boost for 2 steps, but it isn't fair or effective in the long run. If back, teeth, tack, ulcers etc have been checked, perhaps she is school sour? Have you tried hacking her out, is she more forward there? Do you know her history, for example do you know how she was started, what she's done so far etc?
