Hi everyone. I am looking for help getting my mare to go through water. I am at the stage where she will happily follow me into water if I am leading her and I can mount while in he water and she will carry on walking through quite happily. She will also step in small puddles. The difficulty is actually getting her to enter the water (other than small puddles) without me having to get off. Any tips? All people keep telling me is to smack her but that's no the sort of relationship we have or I want. She is already soo much better than she was before as when we started she wouldn't even be lead through a puddle.

Any chance you could have a helper on the ground? Sounds like she just needs some reassurance when you're on board, since you've done such a good job from the ground.
Do you do any long-lining? It's another good way to progress from leading at her side. You can always go up to her head if she needs a lead.

Is he ok stepping off a step elsewhere? If you haven't come across anywhere else, could you take him to a local cross-country course where you might be able to practice steps and possibly combining steps and water?
It might be worth getting an RA out to help you. They might spot something that's worrying him or have a different technique that'll keep you both safer: rearing is no fun for you and it sounds stressful for him.
