It is with absolute heartbreak that we announce the death of our friend and colleague Allison Sixsmith. Allison was diagnosed with cancer many years ago and has borne the ugly illness with humour, determination and utter courage. In December she boasted of “tearing around the place on horseback racing a friend’s 11 year old daughter” who, according to her had “no chance of keeping up with her and her magnificent pony riding”. On the evening of the 26th January she decided to ride onwards and she left us in Exeter Hospice, surrounded by her family.
Many of you will know of Ally from the old DG as she regailed us with stories of the IHDG Rescue Horse “Medallion Manny” Ally and Manny had an incredible bond from the moment they met and she worked tirelessly with him to help him recover from his previous life. It was a rescue that was meant to be. It happened out of nowhere and the ball was meant to roll for him to live with Ally even before he left Spain. He has been diligently looked after by Ally’s friend whilst her illness progressed and will continue there for the future. We’re hoping to reissue some of his adventures shortly in her memory.
Others will know Ally as a DG member (Ally S) for her intelligent, level headed and compassionate responses on the DG, both Old and New. She was always happy to help, advise and offer support to board members and was instrumental in the group growing.
Most of you wouldn’t know Ally for her third role within IH – she was a moderator of this board. As a moderator she was extremely fair, sensible and kind. She would often be the one to suggest the correct way of handling a situation and would very regularly be able to see the conclusion with immense clarity. She was a staunch supporter of IH and Monty Roberts who was open minded to all techniques and theories. She was clever, articulate and balanced.
We’ve lost a truly wonderful person on this physical world. We treasured her and we are privileged we feel able to call her our friend. Her intelligence, compassionate pragmatism and wicked sense of humour lightened every connection we had. Ally wouldn’t want us to be sad, but we are. She would give us some wise words that would make even Eeyore smile and then go and play with Manny and Mattie. When we think about her we wonder if she is still at Rainbow Bridge collecting waifs and strays to take over with her…
