Still looking for a second horse - what a saga!
Well yesterday I decided to try a dealer who I know does have a good reputation. I had arranged to see a cob and she mentioned a grey mare that might suit. I drove 2 hours to get there (well I was going to Hickstead anyway) to arrive to no owner and her girl who didn't know I was coming. The cob was out being tried by someone on a hack (!) so she showed me the mare. She wasn't what I was looking for but thought I'll just see her ridden but alarm bells starting ringing with comments like 'you might hear her cough but they all come over with a cough and we treat them' and 'she's really tired at the moment'. It got worse - another family then arrived and it turned out they had also come to look at the mare! The girl said 'oh you're here first so its first come first serve' and we all stood and watched the poor mare being ridden. By this time I was so stressed I left.
Ok she may have a good reputation but I felt it was really disrespectful to the client i.e. me and anyway how can you just look at a horse, sit on it for perhaps two minutes when you are nervous and say yes. I know I've been out of horses for years and my mare was bought privately but are they all like this now??

Poor horses. Don't know how she's got a good reputation if that's what's happening. Have you contacted any local charities to see if they have anything suitable? Good luck in your search

What are you after holi?
As above, a lot of rescues/sanctuaries have some cracking horses - give trallwm farm a try (they only take rehoming enquiries by phone)

Something to have some fun on!! I'm keeping my mare but because of her previous injuries we will never be able to do what I want. I enjoy schooling - my passion is to learn to ride following the French classical method to produce a lovely light balanced horse (well that's the plan!) So some dressage and a bit of showing to I suppose. Lots of hacking in New Forest so must be steady, not strong, not spooky. Trouble is it's what everyone wants lol

I know Stubley hollow seem to have a good rep and they have a lot of cobs, from what I've seen this isn't the normal decent dealers

well some positive news on the dealer front for you all. In my search I've come across two now who are riders that have had bad riding accidents so now produce safe, sane horses!! One is Cattybrook Horses near Bristol and the lovely Helen is now graded as a para rider apparently. She has the horses for several months and they go through her training to be road safe, sane, go from gallop to walk when you drop the rein and generally have manners.
The other is Cadence Equestrian in Horsham which s fairly new I think and Catherine does similar but doesn't hold them for quite so long. All have physio check, teeth check, go out to a few events, traffic proofing and some in hand stuff. She follows NH. Both say they cater for the 'older, more nervous riders' but still have good horses. Obviously they cost but will go and check them out and report back.

Well I went to the girl in Sussex and the horse was lovely but not playing!! She was not the best of riders to be honest but he really wasnt going anywhere - just didn't want to go forward. I sat on him and he was fab in lateral work providing we walked but just didn't want to trot or canter - nothing nasty at all just a case of 'cant be bothered' lol. She was mortified - even a livery arrived and came over asking what on earth he was playing at!!! Only thing they could think of is that he was out all night and they have had an enormous spurt of grass due to rain and he was totally stuffed!! Thats what it looked like lol - he even fell asleep on my shoulder and when asked to stop (which he was more than happy to do) his lower lip was completely floppy and eyes hooded over - it was hilarious!! Poor Catherine was devastated though and I couldn't offer her the money she wanted so a two hour trip to get there wasted. Tried another today - omg so much leg needed! So its confidence giver i.e doesn't move and forward going i.e spooky, doesn't listen to aids or stop. Horse hunting is so much fun - NOT!!!

Hi Holi if you use Facebook, join Horse stuff for sale in Chichester area - there is a very sweet looking 16.1 cob x Clydesdale on there! In moments of madness I consider loaning my boy. Is that something you would consider or are you all set to buy?
