Hi fellow intelligent horsemanship people
I have an interesting challenge with my rather heafty Irish sports horse (3/4 I.D), Grace, well it's not me that is having the problem it's my husband.
We have to walk 10 mins down a track to turn out, Grace can be quite a handful on this walk in that she can nip, rear, strike out and bolt. We figured out that this behaviour happened when she was in season so this year (we've had her just over a year) we got in touch with Hack up to see if there was something that we could giver her to level out her behaviour. This seems to have done the trick for me as we're just going through her first season on it and we've not had nearly as much aggressive behaviour from her.
The challenge is that she gets very wound up on occasion and can bolt in hand, she has done this with both me and my husband and so far we have escaped without injury but I wanted to ask for suggestions before anything does happen. We always have her in a dually and a long line to make sure that we have space away from her and she knows where she's supposed to walk after doing plenty of ground work with her however I think that my husband may be loosing confidence as the last two days she has been silly every time he's brought her in or turned her out with her bolting this morning and burning through his gloves.
I'm wondering if we should look to getting a chifney but I really don't want to have to go to that as I don't want to damage her mouth in any way but I want my husband to feel safe when leading her in and out. She reacted in the same way at exactly the same time last year so I'm also wondering if there is something coming through in the grass that may be setting her off. It also coincides with me having to take time off from the yard as I'm revising for exams in the second week in June and I'm really distracted by worrying if hubby is ok at the yard which doesn't help for the exams.
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions I would be most grateful, of if I've not put enough info down just ask
Super big thanks in advance.
P.s. I know I've made her sound like a bit of a monster but she really is the most wonderful horse, just a little hiccup now and then
