Please could I ask for some help and advice as to how to ask our horses to move forwards out hacking when they are unsure of the situation? Either if they plant themselves to the ground or fidget/move backwards? I do not want to resort to a raised voice, using a whip or giving a hard nudge with my heels. Is it best to wait it out....? TIA

Might sound a bit strange but sometimes turning round and backing past obstacle has worked for me, need to have a good giggle as you do it lol, don't feel a failure by getting off and walking past, otherwise do lots of desensitisation at home, how long have you had this horse, is this a new issue,

We've had one pony a year and one for 6 months. They bolted a few weeks back because of another horse's behaviour, and now they're quite aware of their surrounds and not keen to go forwards when there lots around us.

I suggest that you match your technique to how the horse is feeling / behaving. If they are really worried, then trying to increase the pressure will only make them more worried: in that case I would get off and lead past with gentle pressure. You could also try just asking for one foot to move, possibly to the side, using a little rein pressure and possibly shifting your weight a little to get them off balance. If this is enough to un-stick them, you might not need to get off.
From what you described in your other post, I wouldn't be surprised if they are genuinely worried and need a bit of a confidence boost. You could get off in advance of the place you think they'll stop, so you're not getting off in response to them stopping (could be seen as a release of pressure when they're doing something you don't want them to do) and instead get a really good walk on the lead so you can give lots of praise when they're moving nicely and little corrections if they start to get distracted or stop.

We went on a hack yesterday, Merry lead with me (the fidget) and I reinforced with the Wip Wop, and we did ok. Diddy (the planter) stopped when in front a couple of times, so we asked them to move to the side and used that movement to go forwards. Neither are keen to back up tho, so have started working with the Dually.
