After a brain injury scare I have had a real reality check about my safety when riding. I am going to buy a new hat, but I have also been looking at body protectors and air jackets too. I came across this www.point-two.co.uk/index.php/store/2012-10-10-09-29-198/p2-rs-1-21-detail which is a combination of both...is it cheaper to buy an air jacket and body protector separate? Or should I just choose one or the other? Does anyone have any recommendations/advice in general about air jackets/body protectors? Are they worth the money? I mainly school, hack out and compete in dressage (and only low height jumping), but a freak accident could happen at any time. Thankyou

I have always had a body protector and an air jacket. I am ashamed to say that I have got very lax about wearing either when I am gentle hacking/schooling. But I ALWAYS wear one or the other for SJ and ALWAYS both for XC (except the time it went off and I forgot the spare canister, so went without for the rest of my round and my second class) and hunting. I only got the air jacket recently (July?) but I love it. It has only actually gone off once, but it seemed to work as I wasn't hurt! I think it also provides my mum with some peace of mind!
I don't know anything about the combination one, but you might get more flexibility with a separate body protector and air jacket? Since then you can wear either or both. Though it might be a good option if you never plan to wear either seperately, I'm not sure what level of protection the body protector portion supplies, you might want to check. I think most people recommend at least BETA level 3... I would say that they are worth every penny, especially a good body protector and hat!

I prefer separate, it means you can wear the air jacket on its own on a warm day

I went to a saddlery to get one properly fitted so I have one to wear for groundwork and backing mayfly. They were so thorough and knowledgeable and found one that fits really well on and off saddle, isn't restrictive and will provide the right level of protection. They also knew all about customising and adapting various makes and models too. Didn't know there was so much to it.

PB, you have to under some competition rules, but it's not a necessity. Of course, you get more protection with both, especially since an air jacket won't always go off in a rotational fall (hence why you generally aren't allowed to wear just an air jacket for XC)

thankyou air jackets are quite dear, but I guess you can't put a price on safety....

I like the look of the combined racesafe and point two but as I already have a racesafe I wouldn't need it. I am planning to buy an air jacket though.
My horse is prone to the odd explosion and I've had a few near misses with injury so I'm religious about wearing my bp. At the time of buying I thought it was expensive but now I've hit the deck at speed in it 2-3 times and not had any bruising under it I now think it was a bargain! It does make a big difference getting one properly fitted, my previous one rarely got used because it was like strapping a bit of ply board to my chest!
