Hi guys
I currently have a head torch which does me ok and has varying light set ups including red lights, these are good when handling the horses in the dark as I tend to find they aren't so harsh on the horses eyes.
However, I'm after any recommendations on decent very bright lighted head torches for doing things up in the field in the pitch black. My horse lives out and general handling in our sectioned off area by the gate is ok with my current head torch but I don't find it bright enough to do anything else around the field like poo picking, checking the fences etc.
Any help would be most appreciated.

More of a general recommendation: get one that won't shine directly into your eyes. I have two head torches. The "nicer", more modern and less clunky looking one is one that sits right against your forehead. The unfortunate side effect is that some of the light from it shines right into your eyes (particularly noticeable when wearing glasses, since the light reflects off the rim). The second is a cheaper Lidl version. Bigger, clunkier, but also sitting out a little further from the forehead. That one is much better and doesn't blind me. Neither one is particularly strong though, so I don't think they'd serve your purposes. I'd probably also look for a model that takes normal AA or AAA batteries, so you can use rechargeable ones and always have spares on hand.

The newer ones seem to have a much smaller bulk and are lighter and more powerful, rather than cheap supermarkets, the outdoor shops tend to have the better-performing lighter-weight options, but there are loads to look at.

No particular recommendations, but I'd suggest looking for ones that have a little bit of padding or are shaped to sit neatly on your forehead, so they're going to be comfortable if you have to wear them for a long time.

Mine is years old and I got it in an army surplus store so no idea what make it is.. But it's fantastic! It's LED and had different intensity settings, 5 in total, it takes good ole aa batteries and not very often.. Last year when we had a power cut and the dogs were upset I fell asleep on the sofa at about 9pm with the torch on.. It was still giving off light in the morning.. So LED all the way! It has an elastic head mans so firs lovely over a hat or just on your head and the light part is movable up/down so you can focus it on the ground in front of you for poo picking etc!

LED Lenser LED6105 SEO5 Head Lamp - I bought it a couple of weeks ago and it's amazing. 2 brightness setting plus a flashing option. Lightweight and durable.

I will need to get a new one at some point, I currently have a Duracell one that had red or white light options the sits comfortably but will need to be replaced at some point. I will definitely get one with the red light option as that is so much better around horses in the dark and doesn't kill my night vision either.

PETZL - i've had many head torches over the years and by far this is the best. I've had it 3 years now and couldn't be without it. They do quite a vast range so i'll try and find a link later to the one I have. They are made for mountain climbers and are tough and waterproof. Mine was recommened by my horse's dentist.
Mine has the night vision red light and a very bright white. You can use these either as a spotlight for distance lighting (checking fence lines/looking for ponies in big fields/spotting dung when poo picking) or you can slide a filter lens up and then you get a less direct wider range light that lights up the whole are in front of you. It's really easy to swith between red/white light even with winter gloves and the filter for the spotlight is the same.
They are lightweight and comfortable and you can direct the torch to the front or tilt it face down (ideal for poo-picking, just tilt it down and light up the area around you feet!)
Honestly, buy one of these and you'll never need another head torch.
Will try and find the link to the model I have.

Another recommendation for Petzl. We have no power down at the yard and I have to do everything and poo pick by head torch right through the winter months.

Found it - www.amazon.co.uk/Petzl-Tikka%C2%B2-XP/dp/B008WGENAC/ref=pd_cp_sg_0This is the one I have, I didn't want orange but this one could go up to a distance of 68 metres (and was 1/2 price in a sale!). I bought it for when I was poo picking a ten acre field - I needed the long distance light regularly! In my earlier post I forgot to mention about the economic lighting mode - this is to save battery power but still lights up the area you need sufficiently. You can flip between all 5 lighting modes by just pressing one button. It does seem expensive for a headtorch but they are top quality. Happy shopping.

Furiey - The red light setting on the Petzl one is excellent, I use it alot when up close with the ponies so that i'm not blinding them with the super bright white one!
