Hi all. I hope everyone is well. Amigo has has sweet itch quiet badly this year that and he kepts pushing under the fencing means he has a very scruffy mane I have an event coming up (distance ride) and although no one else or Amigo will care I would like him to look smart. So do I hog hi. Or can anyone think of any other ways I can make this smarter. He has lost even more at the top now too.

Merry has a mane a little like this too, rubbed in places, and it stands up to a certain degree too, because she is a Fjord and her main is so thick. I don't trim it, I just roll with it, it's her and it kind of suits her personality. I am sure some people would like to get at it - others love it because it is all over the shop! Would it bother you if she doesn't have a mane. I saw a girl at a horse day at our local supplier a couple of weekends back and she looked sad when her horses mane was being shaved off, because a colleague got carried away with the darn clippers and said it looked better - I begged to differ!

Guess if it doesn't bother him with his mane, and make him itch more, then it's personal preference. I wouldn't, I love manes, (Morgan has a lump missing from his at the moment,) but have seen some very smart hogged ones too, although it's not for me. Not much help, but think you've got to do what suits you.

Oh no, poor Amigo! It's been a horrible year for midges and all flying insects, even Dave has rubbed a bit and he never normally does. How lovely that you're going to do a distance ride with him, hope it goes well.
I'm always loathe to hog manes, simply because it seems to take for ever for them to grow back and lie flat again, whereas a 'sweet itch' mane usually looks normal again by the following spring. Could you slick it down with some baby oil and plait the rest?

Thanks guys. I am loathed to do it but its really bad. Its like a comb over!! Liz he has been doing so well this year. He has really grown up so this will be his first big boys outing. At 9 its a bit late but what with having Arthur last year etc its taken until now. I am sure he will do me proud, but I just wish he didn't look quiet so much like the pony I got from the travellers 8 years ago!! I am clipping this weekend I will see if I can shorten the rest and try a plait but really not sure there enough there to plait at all
