That sounds so good. Gorgeous view, and what a helpful farmer to do that! She looks beautiful, and so healthy.

That sounds so good. Gorgeous view, and what a helpful farmer to do that! She looks beautiful, and so healthy. Thanks . It only took me 6 years to pluck up the courage to ask - he's infamous for loathing horses and their riders. Both his sons live on the farm, both of them have partners who used to ride but he won't have a horse on the farm. One of them had a horse for a while and she had to keep it at a livery yard 4 miles away. The owner of the livery yard, who is a local farmer's wife, once took a shortcut across his land out hunting when she needed to retire early. She called in to explain herself and he apparently ranted at her for TWO HOURS and reduced her to a quivering wreck. Years before we lived here there was a big hoo ha about whether the track past our house was a footpath or a bridleway; there was a public inquiry and it was downgraded to a footpath. Hence my reluctance to ask. Recently the old farmer has been taking a back seat and his sons are gradually taking over. They've been driving the quad past our cottage, with our permission, to check on their sheep so I spotted my moment and asked one of them if he would return the favour by allowing me to ride along their section of the same track to join up with the bridleway. He couldn't really say no and it's made a huge difference to my riding this year. I've met the old farmer a couple of times when I've been leading Lucas and I've held a gate open for his Mule with a big grin - he ALMOST smiled back last time, and he hasn't said a word about it.

Aww, that's great. Similar situation with our 'farmer' neighbour. He banned me and my daughter from riding across his land about 10 years ago! I went to see him a few weeks back, to ask if I could ride over again, as it's the only circular route that is away from the road. He asked me where I got my hay, and when I told him he said 'If you buy your hay from me, you can ride through,' He then went on to tell me that the part I wanted to ride over was off limits, as his horses were in the field there, and he didn't want them disturbing! so guess what, I shan't be buying his hay! Don't think i would have anyway, on principle, and also because I like the farmer that I have hay from now. They're not very nice people.

That's rotten for you crazycolt, and frustrating too. I would have made the same decision too though, that's pretty much blackmail - cheek!

Oh my, I am plucking up the courage to ask a farmer next to us if I can ride the footpath through his farm and three fields til it joins the bridleways he is known to be grumpy, although his brother who we have met is delightful. Well done you!

Good luck nich. I'm not sure why farmers have to be so grumpy, I know quite a few and it has to be said the majority of them are not exactly cheerful souls Except Lizpurlo's lovely man of course

I'm sure they're not all the same, just most of them maybe! But, as I thought, you've nothing to lose by asking. If he says no, you'll only be in the same position you are now, and he may very well say yes, without blackmail! x
