Thanks for the replies, guys - I've been away, hence the radio silence.
I hadn't seen the up buckle kit, and it looks really good and would almost definitely have been a solution if the boots weren't already old and tatty. I've had them for a couple of years, so I guess they don't owe me anything! I will give them another inspection though, and see if I think new fasteners will work. I suspect the whole boot is too worn and stretched, but certainly worth checking.
I ordered a pair of Cavallo Treks which arrived while I was away, so I tried them on today and they are way too big! So, I guess a size smaller is required. I'm really surprised because I measured carefully, and re measured today, but no question, too big!

That's bad luck ruthp, I do think the Cavallos can come up big sometimes. Can you send them back to swap for the next size down? Bambi's Cavallo simples she wears in front are getting too small for her, I think her heel bulbs have been quietly strengthening and the boots are getting tight. I suspect the next size up will be too big though which is a pain - boots can be a bit frustrating can't they?!

I've had fun and games sizing Cavallo Treks for Merry. The fronts I measured correctly, but the backs, she measured a size 1 (by my barefoot trimmer) but I couldn't get her feet in them, so I've ordered a size 2. Hugely frustrating, but I hope these fit, haven't got round to trying them on her yet. I do find measuring for boots tricky. :/

Ironically it seems boots aren't really designed for hooves with a nice bulky digital cushion and heel bulbs. I've met a few horses who've outgrown boots this way, even if their ground bearing surface still stays the same. Probably the exception is the renegades as you can let the heel captivator out.

I do find measuring for boots tricky. :/ I agree! With anything from the Easycare range, I've always ended up with a boot at least half a size if not a full size smaller than measured, no matter how carefully done. So with the Cavallos I went for the smaller size (having measured between a 1 and 2) and couldn't squeeze the heel bulbs in. So, swapped for 2s (they were all second hand off ebay, so not much money lost, thankfully!). They seemed a bit loose and gave pretty bad rubs on the pasterns, so back to Gloves... Last week I just spent £80 each (!!!) on a pair of Equine Fusions (of course the only boot styles made for small ponies are all in the range of £80 per boot...). I measured very, very carefully on a newly trimmed hoof. When I got the boots, I cut a perfectly fitting paper "insole" for the boot, to see how large the surface inside the boot really is. The ground surface within the boot is definitely shorter than the measurements suggest. No wonder I have trouble picking the right size... Thankfully, the boots fit anyway. Of course, now my pony seems to be sound again bootless on the softer ground, so maybe I could've saved all that money. I guess there's always ebay

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't get it right. But it is frustrating isn't it? Makes you feel so incompetent - can't even wield a tape measure properly!

Just want to say thanks to MichelleP and all the others who recommended Cavallo Treks. The right size arrived on Thursday, so I turned Bali out in them for half an hour, and she seemed very comfortable. A short hack on Friday, including walk, trot and canter, and the boots stayed firmly put. Also Bali didn't trip once, and she can be pretty clumsy with her feet. Schooling on Saturday, and a longer hack today including long canters through long grass. I was worried that the boots might move or rub, so I examined her feet carefully, and no problems to report. Very slight rubbing of hair at one point, but not enough to hurt the skin.
Bali and I are very happy. Boots that fit, are incredibly easy to put on and remove, stay put at all paces, and are cheaper than the competition.
What's not to like?

glad they're working for you, I love them too. Bambi hasn't needed them recently, her feet are doing really well at the moment, even over long distances and trickier terrain but it's good to know I've got them if and when I need them. I love the fact that they're easy to put on too - not to mention the very reasonable price.

Thanks for the write up, and info everyone. I'm hoping to get a pony soon, who will need de-shoeing and probably booting at first, so this is v useful.
