Too many angels..
Kody (top left) and Duffy (top right) went and joined my herd in the clouds this morning.
It's been a week from hell waiting for today.. But they went quickly and without suffering here at home..
Kody slipped on ice in her field several years ago, I have never stopped since trying to get her sound. I failed. She always had hormonal issues since I got her as a 3yo when she would mount my other mares.. In the past two years she developed cushings, insulin resistance and so on and so on
A blade of grass and she had LGL last year and I refused to put her through the misery of what lay ahead of her, she was still lame, slightly but unable to work and unable to go back on tracks system.. She hated being stabled with a passion..
Duffy came to me 3 years ago.. Just over a year ago she was started under saddle but it was scarily obvious there was a problem.. It took me a few weeks and lots of professionals to figure out what the problem was.. She had arthritis of her TMJ (jaw) and poll, most likely caused by a tie up/pull back injury as a foal. Over the past year regular Osteo treatments as well as acupuncture and herbal supplements helped her but less so and in the last few weeks it became obvious she was getting sore again, but she refused to allow anyone treat her. She was not well able to chew hay properly, was going to start choking again (acupuncture had helped this previously) but she couldn't work as any pressure on her head hurt her, I was the only person who could catch her the past few months.. And she was extremely high risk for lami being a Connemara pony that couldn't eat hay.....
They would never have another day better than the one before.. Stuck inside, in small bare paddocks, on drugs and treatments they didn't want..
So I chose their welfare over my own and I would suffer the heart ache every day before I let them suffer a day..
Kody was 9 this year, Duffy 7
Kody was 'my' first horse.. I had a few rescue ponies when I got her but she was all mine
Duffy has left me a beautiful 3yo boy who I hope will do her proud..
They had their breakfast like normal this morning, in the field in their herd, came in for a big huge feed (full of acp!) so when the vet arrived 10 mins later they were happy chilled out and had no idea what was happening.
I haven't cried today, till just now.. I don't regret decisions once they are made.. But boy did I cry last Monday when I made the calls..
Sweet dreams my beautiful girls, go play with your friends and I will come find you when I'm done xxxxx
