I'll keep you posted Sorry for hijacking the thread, but perhaps Belle's issues will be useful info for someone trying the same thing

Well I briefly lunged Belle (as I had heard that a little exercise each day helps) and no flicking at all so far today so I'm really, really hoping the grass was the issue and that I caught it in time. I may take her out for a hack tomorrow, but I'm not sure, there are so many stinky rape seed fields near me and although it may not be the issue I can't help worrying about it. Last year with all the rain I couldn't keep her in a small dry paddock, so I wonder if getting too much grass was why I failed then.

Hacked Belle out today for a walk around the block, the air was heavy with pollen, at the start she flicked once (just a tick really , but enough to make me think "oh no" ) but nothing more and a few snorts. Out for an hour at a good walking pace (really striding out) and she was absolutely fine. I'm feeling like we are back on track with a far better understanding of what is required to keep her happy

one interesting thing i've noticed since upping Reggie's salt, is he's no longer tripping behind at a trot/canter... when his headshaking was at its worst, he started tripping behind, sort of losing his hindlegs momentarily at trot/canter, and the website with all the info on salt/headshaking did mention this as one of the more serious symptoms... i've started working him again, and he's not doing this at the moment, so really hoping it was all tied in with his sodium balance!

I've not heard about the tripping before, that s interesting. I contacted the owner of this site headshakingsyndrome.com/treatments.html and she said she had just read about the salt theory and would be trying it with a mare at her stable. Belle is still fine and no headshaking, but I need to up her feed as she is looking a bit ribby with no grass. I'll have to restock with hay. I can't work her for a few days as she has scratched her back trying to lean through the fence to the grassy bits.
