Determined to ride asap so want an exercise sheet to keep horse dry. Are the ones under or over leg better? Also perhaps stupidly I don't get the sizing...what would fit a horse taking a 5ft9 rug? Thanks

I bought an aerowear hi-vis one that is fleece lined. It goes under the saddle. Lovely but too hot so bit useless! There are 3 sizes - pony, cob, full. I have full size and my boy takes a 7' rug, so you might want the cob one?

Exercise sheets go down a foot from your rug size so he would prob need a 4ft 9 depending on his build although one of mine is 5ft 9 in a rug but takes a 4ft 6 sheet.
I have various but by far the best are the ones I have made myself just recently out of showerproof/windproof Hi-Viz fleece material, two layers of thin windproof fleece with a very thin showerproof layer in the middle, lightweight and perfect, they go under the saddle but shaped behind your leg. I've copied the Shires fleece ones shape to make mine.
The over your leg ones just fly up in the smallest breeze although they look rather nice obviously and keep your legs warm!
I have waterproof ones but am in the process of selling as they are fleece lined and even on a full clipped pony they are too hot and rustley and slip back.

I have an Amigo wraparound one and the same one as Cheekychops. I normally use the Amigo one as I find it easier to put on as you can put it on before or after the saddle (and I am the sort of person who will tack up and realise I forgot to put the excercise sheet on and have to unpack again to put it on otherwise...) and you can also use it at comps and take it of just before you go in and travel them tacked up in rugs and the put it on when you arrive somewhere. I have it in the Large and my girl normally takes a 6ft3 rug, so you would probably want a medium.

Brill thank you!! I think I shall get one for under as not worried about my legs, do horses normally seem bothered by being ridden in one? Thanks for sizings, they were all 4ft 4ft3 etc and threw me!!

Mine have never been bothered by them. I prefer either the ones that fasten under the saddle flaps or a quarter sheet that attaches to the girth straps. Get one without fleece lining as they get too hot unless fully clipped.

I've got an Equafleece one which is fully waterproof, he doesn't get too hot in it and isn't fully clipped but I don't use it if it's mild weather. Talin takes a 5ft9 rug and a 4ft exercise sheet. I got a 4ft6 for him orignally and it swamped him.

I have 3 I have 2 Mark Todd ones, one is waterproof and the other is just fleece. Both go either under the saddle flaps or over your legs. I'm sure they're a 4'9" and my mare is in a 6'6" rug. The other one I have is an Equafleece, it's brilliant as you can roll it up or put it under the saddle flap or over your legs. I bought her a large but this comes up really small on her & looks silly.

I use a fleece rug, with the straps tied up. I sit on it on top of the saddle, then removed the rug, and throw over the gate once he is warmed up

I use a hi-viz pink one by Equisafety. It goes under the saddle. I was thinking earlier it'd be really easy to make one from fleece if I just wanted an exercise sheet rather than the hi-viz aspect.

I use fleece throws as in oldfashion banket style before excercise sheets came out! fold up the front and put saddle on top. Cost £2 not worried about water proof as they breathe and don't feel wet. get back and then put a waffle or fleece cooler on. I also use fleece throws as wicking coolers attached with a good old fashion surcingle. Call me a cheepskate but it works , I can have loadsof them for the priceof one and if you are on a tight budget perhaps a good idea for you too!

Yep Amanda is right, as well as my homemade 'proper' exercise sheets, i also have fleece throws, can't resist them when Dunelm have a sale as they do some really whacky bright colours, perfect for hacking out - LOL!

i use the polite range of hi viz, watwr proof, and easy to fit, they dont go over the riders legs but they wrap around the front of the horse and the saddle

Some horses do panic with them - especially if they are a bit too flappy/big and/or the wind gets under them. I personally prefer the Horseware ones (the Newmarket fleece ones are SO yummy!) - I hate ones that go under the saddle as have not yet found any that truly sit still and don't pull back/down/rub. Apart from the Polypads Duo I have, but that's only any good if you normally use polypads! I use the wrap-round ones under the saddle flaps or stirrups leathers (ie not wrapped round over my legs) and they are perfectly secure this way. This is my 5'9 horse wearing the Medium horseware sheet sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/387902_10150460927692630_787514092_n.jpg - which apparently measures 4'7 (I don't know why Horseware aren't consistent with 'normal' sizes eg 4'6?!) The Small (4'3) is actually a better fit on her - she's quite narrow - so it does depend on the build of your horse width-wise as well as their rug length.

I suppose this where spooky busting to the flappy monster comes in handy ;D
