Ugh. As a meet eater I don't feel I can be too critical of those who chose to eat humanely slaughtered horse meat. (altho the live transporting across Europe clearly is abhorrent)
However, in a beef burger??!!
That is surely a failure in the tracing of the source. I can't see how that doesn't pose a risk to health as if you don't have the content you expect how do you know for sure what you do have???!!!
So scary.

I have been reading the Chorizo sausage labels carefully for year as they usually come from Spain and often contain donkey or horse, but I didn't expect a british–born supermarket to sell me horse–meat in its burgers. Buy British isn't what it was.

Have known all along that as horse meat is called beef it has always been included in beef products, especially the cheaper ones. When the BSE scare came around a good few years ago a lot of pie manufacturers altered their recipes so that they could guarantee it BSE free. When a pie label reads 100% beef you dont know if it is horse beef, cow beef or a mixture of the two.

Pony-Nutt, I didn't know that. I thought that beef is from cows, ie boeuf. I was going to go on about the Norman Conquest but just quickly found this very good site that explains it very well, and suggests it may not even be quite true:http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2008/why-do-we-eat-beef-and-pork-rather-than-cow-and-pig
But I suppose words do lose their specific meanings over time.
Perhaps it's the horse-meat in cheap burgers and cheap pies that gives it that horrid dog-meat (as in tinned meat for dogs) smell. In fact - yes! When I served my ponies' - er - sweetmeats at a dinner party, they had that same dogfoody smell!

I have two quarter pounders, potentially containing 0.1% horse, that are going back to Lidls. From now on all burgers in our house will be home–made. After all it isn't exactly hard to do. Take 1 lb of minced beef — can I trust the Lidl's mince? It says "from beef reared in UK" and "minced in UK", so it should be from cattle.
Divide the pound of mince into four, grab one 1/4 shape into a ball, flatten a bit, put in a clean poly bag and freeze. If you want it exotic, you can add salt and pepper before you shape them! Why ever did I stop making burgers that way?

We didnt catrin, only ever make my own burgers as they're so easy although now might start mincing my own beef too, make sure it is from cows!

I don't eat beef anyway as it makes me Ill, maybe that's why.. But last week I decided seen as I am now head chef I am now vegetarian again.. So glad I made that decision now for more than the reasons I had already... I also did not know horse meat was called beef, gross... What the hell have humans been eating without knowing... Yuk..

Buying from a british super market is no guarantee at all of the origin of the goods...

OMG! If ever there was a case for going veggie, how absolutely awful. I too did not know that horse meat could be classed as 'beef' that is gobsmacking in the extreme!! As asked before on here, can we trust that bought minced beef is bovine beef?? I feel ill just thinking about it. Thankfully we don't eat prepared burgers (except at barbecues!! Urgh!) but yes bought pies make their way into our house. Seriously gong to have to rethink our eating habits..........

Sorry, but by definition horse meat is not classed as beef - beef is meat from a bovine, 'A full-grown steer, bull, ox, or cow', a horse is not a bovine. Of course there may always have been the practice of adding horse meat to 'beef' in the past and present but it cannot be described as 100% beef - which perhaps is why they are suddenly being found out. I think it is pertinent that the horse meat has been found in 'value' beefburgers - who would eat one of those anyway?
