I have read many many books on handling, breaking, training horses from Montyand Kelly to Mark Rashid, Elaine Heney, Sarah Weston and Richard Maxwell. I have been to so many of Monty''s demos and find them all interesting and feel that they all have some great practical hints and also has helped me think a lot about how i have behaved around horses.
I dont have my own horse now so cannot practice these techniques but really really want to have a go!! I have also wanted to learn how to correctly long line for years.
There are horsemanship courses out there but most you need to take a horse with you...do i have any chance at all of 'having a go'?

If you live near me you are very welcome to come and have a go everything from an old stager to one ready to start and back, a driving pony for longreining and a sensitive ridden pony who needs socialising with more people. Happy for the company no money changes hands and no work unless you want it. Please PM and I will let you know where we are

Whereabouts are you? We have clinics with Becky Holden who can teach in hand and long lining work and I can usually find a horse so you don't need to bring one. We're in Shillington on the Herts/Beds border. Details of the clinics are on FB on Model Farm Clinics.

Thank you IrishCob - see you immediately bond with another Cobber! Yes no need for your own horse on Five Day Foundation and you get to role play first saddle plus long line, join up and ALL SORTS. If money is a problem you can always come as a helper to start off.

If you can afford to go on the 5 day foundation course do it, it's totally worth every penny, I loved every second of it

If the IH 5 day foundation course is out of your wallet's reach, there is also the Perfect Manners weekend course. Also, some of the RAs have horses they could teach you longlining and other groundwork skills with. Some of us also run courses (note to self to organise courses for this year...) although they wouldn't include Join Up. Where are you based, cobmum? We might be able to help point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all your responses. I am based in Stockport, South Manchester. I can't stretch to the 5 day course but going to have a chat with hubby about weekend course although we are saving for a mortgage deposit I keep being told a house is more important than a horse...silly men! ;D How would i sign up to become a helper?

Hi cobmum - call the office on 01488 71300 and speak to Brenda to ask about helpers places on the courses. You will still learn loads, and get to sit in on all the lectures - I really enjoyed helping on the 5 day foundation course, and then returned the following year once I'd saved up to be a student on it!

Hello Cobmum I am a cobmum too! No advice to add to the above, just wanted to say welcome. Also - what a lot of lovely people we have on here, offering to give their time and lend their horses. I'm proud to be an IH member ;D (feeling warm and fuzzy today ;D probably need to sleep, lol! )

I was a helper on a 5 day course a couple of years back & it was fab, honestly. You are surrounded by people on the same wavelength as you and have the opportunity to observe some of the best horsepeople in this country teach. You have the option to camp for cheap or pay for B&B like I did. I haven't forgotten the experience & wish I could have done it many years ago, but Kelly wasn't born then !

I could repay you by mucking out or lots of grooming Probably best would be for me to come up with a plan at what i would like to have a 'go' at and see if you would be comfortable with that plus anything you can show me would be much appreciated!
