Please... My little rescue Shetland mare has a very severe colic.. Found her in the field this morning, obviously been rolling a long time.. Layers of cold mud.. Once the vet arrived in the space of an hour she's needed 4 separate injections of pain meds and sedation... No sign of a twist or impaction... But she's been in incredible pain.. She's sleeping now under sedation.. Fingers crossed she wakes up feeling better.. If she's no worse in a hour we will start on fluids.. But the vet is surprised at her level of pain Poor twinkle toes.. Her son is out the field and doesn't seem to have noticed his mom/milk is gone.. He's too busy munching hay... But the other 2 minis with him have and are calling.. (Had started to wean him anyway) Fingers and toes crossed for twinkle toes.. She's had a hard life.. 4yo with 2 sons and dumped a few months ago-how I ended up with them..

Thinking of her Kizi and keeping everything crossed for her. A fellow livery's horse had colic on wednesday - the owner was at work and I was the one that spotted him - I ended up being up there virtually all day - the vet that came out said it was the third she had attended that day!!

She came round from the sedation neighing and looking for food but seems to be deteriorating again.. Cannot keep her warm as she's covered in mud, every time she starts to warm up she goes cold again.. 3 rugs wet through she's starting to dry.. Now onto towels under rain sheet.. Cant use straw as the silly billy keeps trying to eat it.. hasnt strength to chew it and still tries to swallow it.. She's so hairy and that's matted with mud.. Stable is cozy.. But now she's shivering again and getting quiet.. She ain't outa the woods yet..

Are you on sandy soil, you may want to give her some sand-out or psyllium which will help reduce sand in gut. One of ous colicked due to large pockets of sand in his gut (they xrayed him)

Just given her more sedation and vet on way back again Not sandy soil.. But if she recovers I will give her sand out.. This is down to 4 years of neglect and starvation probably.. Spasmodic colic.. Which usually should pass but the pain meds and anti spasm meds seem to be having no effect..

Random thought but is it 100% gut colic? Could it be pain from elsewhere eg. blood worms?
