It'll be the tail flap unfortunately and the fillet string if it's a material one.
I cover my mares inner thighs and bottom with baby oil, she has her tail plaited, sprayed in Magic Sheen and put in a tail bag and i've got a plastic coated fillet string otherwise she spends her life smelling of pee............

Great feedback... thank you.... well I do feel like I'm washing out her big old lacy bloomers when this happens! Nappy cream... good idea... plastic coated fillet string.. great. I had removed her leg straps and had a string on her... it may be redirecting the flow. We'll see. We'll wash her again tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Drapolene does not leave them all greasy and oily it is a bit like hand cream and disappears into the skin unlike Sudocrem.

could she have a urinary infection that is making her wee more acid, there is a mare at the yard my horse lives at that has had it a few times and it makes her quite sore too with or without tail flap and her owner also keeps her tail trimmed or patted so its not heavy.

Currently sitting here with the gentle wafting of mares pees every now and again as it's ingrained into my hands from earlier today...........such a pleasant aroma - LOL!

Yuk! The only time I've ever smelt of pee was when at livery and we were forced to use those awful muck sheets to get muck direct into a trailer. I am a mucky so and so too.

Definitely replace the fillet string with leg straps. Hope she manages to maintain a tiny shred of dignity! KoLaTo - you need Crabtree and Evelyn Gardener's Handwash It is cucumber, sage and (randomly) alfalfa. Best horse-wee-smell removing soap I have found! Pricey but it works.

Shampooed the area with an anti-fungal, rinsed, dried and buttered her up with a little sudocrem today. She seemed comfy and possibly in season... Thank Marvin.. yes, worth keeping an eye on certainly.. will do. Far less smelly today and just gave her tail a wipe down on the underside once finished. She dragged me out for a garden graze..... spirits are certainly intact! 10 degrees here tonight. Unreal.

A rug without one just wouldn't sell though I don't think - if you love your horse show it by giving them a humungous big tail flap - and a neck cover, and an extra deep rug, and far too much preprepared and expensive food

I didn't even know they had tail flaps. Yes, Jill, it seems so much we do to protect and coddle our horses the more problems we can cause for them. Strange irony I think.

Did you use sudocream? Did that work? I've one now too not raw etc yet but heading that way.. I've taken a lot of tail off for now (it will regrow!!) because its get wet and muddy and very heavy so that seems to be sorting my lady out, she's not rugged, but just wondering if the sudocream did the job? Hate the gunky yuk but what ever works!!

Yes it did Kizi... that and ditching the fillet string I thought was kinder than the leg straps- mistake. I think the fillet was letting the pee leach down onto the insides of her legs leaving a burn.
I left her unrugged for a mild week and washed in Malese twice a day for four days (in case there was bacterial muck), rinsed, dried off (patting no rubbing) and slopped on Sudocreme. She's still a bit baldy looking, but no smell and clean, soft, healthy skin. The Sudocreme didn't catch much muck as it was tucked up in well between her legs.
Note to self... plastic covered fillet strings next time. I do like Sudocreme because it's so inert, non-sting etc.
