I had one that always had to roll on feed bcukets but never when they had food in them. He was colty and I put it down to playing. Maybe there is more to it.

my first pony, Welsh cob x Arab gelding, used to roll with his head in his bucket every time he finished his feed! he was a real little character - never worked out why... he was the only one on the yard that did it at the time - everyone was as baffled as i was lol!

Over the years, a number of the shetlands we've had have rolled on their own buckets either during or after a feed. All males, interestingly. I've never really worked out why. Molly (Shetland mare lol) sometimes rolls with the bucket on her head, ie. keeping head in bucket when she goes down. None of the others do it. I don't know why either but it is amusing.

Thanks for the replies. It's nice to know its not totally unheard of!
Poppy- funny you should mention that, the thought had crossed my mind that perhaps he had to fight for his feed before now. I know at the riding school we got him from he was kept 'light' and on very strict rations...not sure about before that.
Varkie-Glad you're all well. Big hugs to everyone and little willow xx
