Not unusual at all, mine are all barefoot and they all slip base over apex on ice on the yard and any smooth surface just like a human does, barefoot doesn't cure it whatsoever, just means their feets don't get frozen to the ground if they stand still too long - LOL!
On that note, i stuck my sealskinz gloved hand to my five bar tonight..............

Farrier had to trim Bailey's feet on the grass in the recent bad weather as the concrete was far too slippery.

Just to be clear, I don't take him across sheets of ice or anything. But some of the liveries with shod horses say things like, "Oh you'll be fine, he's barefoot," when that's not the case.

IME they slip less than shod horses but do still slip on the really icey bits.
