That's interesting - I didn't realise Excaliber was a Backley pony - I really like the Backley ponies. I have a feeling he may grow up much like one I used to have - who was beautiful, like a mini dressage pony, but not necessarily the typiest. You may find that mixing carrot or apple shavings in with food will encourage them also.

Thank you bramblesmum, they are a lovely pair of foals. Good looking, friendly, confident. I'm delighted with them. I haven't tried a molassed feed yet, mainly because I don't have any, except some old sugar beet. I'll put some into soak and try that tomorrow. Hi varkie, yes, he's a Backley. I really can't understand why nobody else bid on him, because I think he's wonderful! Well, I got the results of the worm count on all 7 of my ponies today, and the only one with any worm eggs found, was Sunny, and he had a low count of 100! I'm speechless, perhaps they've already been wormed. I'll be very interested to see what their droppings look like when they are wormed. All the other foals droppings looked like plum puddings there were so many worms in them! I still intend to worm before I turn them out in the field.

Hurray! I was in a bit of hurry when I fed them this morning, so I gave them both their bowl of readigrass, while I did their water buckets and hay, and before picking some fresh grass to mix with it for Excalibur, and he ate it!!! ;D I feel I'm really getting somewhere now. Onward and upward.

Thank you ladyndibs, the foals are very rewarding. Sunny has actually nickered to me several times when I've gone down the garden this evening. OK, he nickered to the feed bucket, but even so.............! ;D I've given them several bowls of readigrass this evening while their hay has been soaking. I've been soaking it for 20 - 30 mins, instead of 15mins, since Excalibur was coughing on Wednesday. I haven't heard him cough since but then I've seen very little of them since Wednesday. Yes, it's all looking good on the feeding front now thanks, varkie, I put a spoonful of molassed sugar beet in their last bowl of readigrass, and a handful of nuts. They haven't eaten the sugar beet, but I'm not sure about the nuts, as they hadn't finished the readigrass before I gave them their hay. Michelle, bring wellies, even my field is very soggy at the moment, and wear thermal everything. We're forecast for a cold but sunny day, can't ask for much better than that in December!
