Thanks for all your comments. She seems a little less stressed in the stable now and I've started doing a bit of clicker with her in the stable, just targeting, head lowering and backing, I also tried her with a Ttouch type wrap. It's really not surprising if she's unsettled as it's the first time she has moved home, she's so lovely, I just want to be sure of not making too many mistakes with her and so I've been really interested to hear your experiences and suggestions. Thanks again.

A new horse to a new person (rather than just changing yards with an existing horse) could take up to a year to settle and develop a full working relationship. As others have said here they often seem quiet and settled relatively quickly but some are very good at putting on a 'facade' in order to cope, and will slowly reveal their true selves over a period.

Took her in the school for the first time this morning and she really got in a bit of a panic because from there she can't see my other horse and the horses next door weren't out either. Even though she was whinnying and wanting to canter round (on the end of the rope) I still managed to get her to do some head lowering with targeting (I'm a real clicker training nut). Oh and also meant to say, she does have a mirror in her stable and always eats hay from the floor.

I moved yards in the spring and it's taken my mare, who I've owned for 13 years (since she was a foal) until this last few weeks to truely settle and the only thing that's changed is her environment! She's still got me, her two friends and the same routine so for a horse to move to a new home it could take months. I think it takes a full year i.e all the seasons, to get to know each other anyway.

When I first had my boy it took him well over 12 months to fully settle but when I just moved home and he went with me he settled straight away. He had been through a few homes and a dealer when I first bought him so a lot of changes. Ive had him for over 5 years now so understand his little quirks and what upsets him. He cant cope with going anywhere different without me now, he went to horse hospital and went ballistic when I wasnt there What works for him is the obvious stuff, quiet yard, calm handling and consistent routine.
