I'm a regular but anon for this thread. A friend of mine bought a horse from this gentleman, he is based in Lancs. The horse was and is perfect, her dealings with Alan were faultless. I was very surprised when she said the deal was done with an "old fashioned handshake"! She knows several others who have had the same dealings with him. I have been horse hunting for 8 months now. I have been to view countless horses (last count was 14!) in private homes and not one has been as described. The phrase "he's never done that before" has been used too many times so, I am finding myself wanting to take my friends advice and give him a call. So has anyone had any dealings with him?? Feel free to PM me if you'd rather.xxx

Have PM'ed you but will say that ALan is one of the good guys............yes he is considered 'old fashioned' and he always concludes a deal with a handshake, one of the old school of dealers, but he won't sell you the wrong horse, if he has nothing to suit he will say so, same as if he thinks the horse you want is wrong he will say so as well.................

Can't add anything on this dealer but when I was looking for a horse I found honest dealers were the best option. I saw many horses in private sales that were nothing like described but the good dealers I went to told me what the horse was like and sure enough, that was what it was like.

years ago I knew a professional rider who said always use a good dealer - far more honest and safer than a private sale as they had to keep their reputation. He then always dealt with Donal Barnwell who then went on to establish the Billy stud with Will Funnell! Good luck

HI I know jusy how you feel, it isnt so much visiting and it isnt wrong but its paying out 3 5 stage vetting fees and no horse at the end. In retrospec the first one was beautiful and sooo lovely nature and such a generous horse in heaviest traffic both June and I were blind to her movements not right and made excuses. So that was huge learning for us both.
Next failure was a bit of a shock at how bad he was, but we did have early warning bells from Becky ( Holden ) of his hind action. But June was still shocked at just how bad he was and such a lovely horse.
Now failure 3 was the worst in that I would not have even viewed this horse if the truth was told then. But 2 viewings and questions answered that I wanted to hear. Even June with me ..video to my vet to check action.. this wasnt the horse who was vetted! so not only bareface lies lie3s over the phone we had strong suspicions that something untoward was done to this lovely mare when we tried her. So sad.
In the end I go so upset. I cant say how many I di see in the end and remember like you I bet you have chucked out many after the phone call. I got Lukas via my vet from a dealer.!! one he deals with often but no conflict of interest in vetting him.
All through June said when she was looking for her own horse it was the dealers who had what they said they had. They were straight and honest. I wont say all are as the last horse who failed vetting she was a small time dealer working out from a livery yard not her own place and not telling the truth. I think though many are as they have a business to run and a reputation to keep. My vet said people sell horses for all sorts of reasons, its just finding out what the real reasons are! now that is the problem.
So if you get good feed back then go and view. Usually they will agree to a vetting as well. That is something I am very glad I did, it might have cost me 1K in lost horses but cheaper then long term lawnmowers!

Stay clear !!!!!! Alan is NOT one of teh good guys at all
I bought a horse from him - on a 3 month basis on the condition if she didn t work out and wasn t suitable he d take her back, sell her on and continue to source something else for me He picked her up - sold her on to someone in Scotland - but failed in 6 months to find another horse - so i eventually found my perfect horse myself - when i asked for the money back, less a fee for selling her he said hed drop it off - this went on for months and he never showed up I eventually found out that he had left his yard and vanished owing thousands, something he has done numerous times He is apparantly back on the scene and i am pursuing the matter through the courts He is no different to the rest

My daughter saved for two years to buy her first horse. After a year of searching we came across Allan Birch and Amy Morton ( his partner) I went with my daughter to view after she contacted him. All seemed jolly nice and he suggested what he said was suitable for her as if would be her first time owning. She has been riding for 9 years since she was 9. She and I made it very clear what she was looking for, if anything she played down her ability as she did not want to be overfaced. She rode for a while after girl in the yard showed us what he vould do. I explained that it was paramount the horse was SAFE with no underlying issues. We did not want anything green . Second day of trying him out he was neighing constantly and shaking his head and I said I did not think he was right fir her as he gad thrown his head up several times. Quick as a flash Allan Birch was onboard and of course, being the accomplished horseman he is, soon turned things around. He then spent time with my daughter giving her some instruction whilst she rod We were so naive! He assured us that we could have it in writing that if he was mot suitable an exchange would be found without delay(obviously we understood this can take a little time) and that 'hand on heart' should have known he does not have one, he would not let us down. He was vetted and transported to our yard. The night he brought him Amy was very keen to get the cash but Allan said no rush,( although my daughter bank transferred the money the same night)He cheekily joked he could have sold him that day for twice the amount my daughter had paid! ( mmm 🤔)Very soon it became apparent , within two weeks this horse had issues. My daughter was advised to give him time to settle but 4 weeks in she messaged them to say she was not happy and he was beyond her capabilities and not just hers! No one and I mean no one could get to the heart of the issue. Allan Birch and Amy Morton refused to help. This went on for months. My daughter tried everything. Amy never returned her calls or fb messages. If she saw my daughter was online trying to message she quickly came off messenger. They were uncontactable. Some people advised just taking the horse back to their establishment and demanding an exchange but firstly that would have been traumatic for the horse and secondly we just kept hoping they would relent. My daughter kept on messaging and asking if anything was available to swap but on the one occadion she did reply it was to say that the weather was too bad to view Eventually ,4 months later they agreed tp swap him but the alternatives were no better. She was offered a very green young horse which we had seen on their fb page as a stallion and had only just been gelded and a fell pony which even A Morton said was not suitable. I paid for the horse to go to a livery yard where he could be schooled and ridden by competent grooms. Only to ne told he had thrown the best of the jockeys and was advised he was dangerous. The owner actually rang me and said he is not safe and my grooms won't be riding him again. Still Allan Birch did nothing.Even after being told by the owner of the school who he knows well, he simply laughed it off. By this time it was costing me a small fortune in the region of 425 a month to get him help. My daughter developed glandular fever ( brought on by stress)but they did not want to know. Eventually after a third party intervened they agreed to take him back by which time we had no trust in Allan or Amy. He was abusive , probably the foulest mouth I have ever heard. I tried to appeal to his sense of fairness but he mocked and said it was just tough. My daughter was ill and in the middle of her 'A' levels! I suggested to them that after so many broken promises from them that maybe the best solution was to refund as our trust was totally lost. Finally after my son became involved they agreed to collect him. I asked them to wait untill I got to the yard and was assured that they would not remove him untill I had arrived.I got a phone call from a family member to say Amy had already loaded him and was leaving the premises. My sister intervened and insisted they wait five minutes for me to arrive. I could not believe my eyes when I turned up. Amy Morton was fuming and I explained that Allan had assured me she was not taking him untill I arrived. She then gave me an ultimatum of take him now or nothing. I suggested at this stage a refund as my daughter did not want to see them again. She was very rude but agreed either to a refund (partial) or a swap. I had no choice but to agree. It was an hour later I got a call from the yard to say Amy Morton had brought the horse back!] Over a week later we had to go through the whole scenario again, another weeks livery paid by me, another week of uncertainty and finally they took him and refunded half my daughters money. Apart from the emotional upset of having to part with him after 6 months, my daughter got only half the price back she paid. The whole incident made her and myself ill. It has knocked all her confidence, it has taken 8 months for her to get her confidence back after being reared upon and dragged about. It's only because she was full of determination not to cave in that got her through. So, my advice is STAY WELL CLEAR!They are incompetent in business, liars and without conscience. The cheery chap, cups of tea and friendly welcome extended to you on your first visit is not what you can expect if you encounter any issues later on. Funny how you only hear the 'bad reviews' about these type of inscrupulous people after the event and we did in plentiful supply! 😔
