Only just seen this thread!
If you break down in a wagon or with a trailer with a horse on board and you are in a place where you could be hit, phone the police.
Traffic police are there to prevent accidents as well as deal with them.
We had the wagon accelerator cable snap on a dual carriageway on the uphil side of a bridge over the railway so there was no hard shoulder. First call was the police, second call breakdown. The traffic cop parked his car behind the wagon with full lights and arrows on it and stayed with us, not just until breakdown arrived but right until we were ready to be towed home.
On a fast road, regardless of whether you have a horse on board, you still need to get out of the vehicle and get yourself safe but the police are more than willing to help.
On another note, the police actually help me years ago on the hard shoulder of the motorway - we'd pulled over as the horse had suddenly kicked off to the extent that we couldn't safely get to the next junction. Pulled over and before I knew it, police were parked behind us and out helping me. I am eternally grateful to them!
