I can't mention names on here due to difficulties with notifying all her friends and family, but a few weeks ago my dear, dear friend died unexpectedly leaving her husband a widower with some difficult decisions to make about her very elderly horse.
After dealing with the initial shock of losing my friend, I have today honoured something I know was so important to her - for her horse to have someone with him who he knew and who loved him right until the end. I hope beyond anything that he is now reunited with my friend and that they can both rest in peace together. I will never forget his last moments and the smell of snuggling into his neck in the rain xxx

Thank you all. This friend was the first person I'd ever met whose love and utter dedication to her horse clearly went miles beyond any ego or personal gain. She was truly happy to have her horse's company and expected nothing else of him, and of course he gave her (and me) so much more. When I met them I was staggered by their bond. My friend would tack up by putting the saddle cloth on her horse and waiting a few seconds, if he didn't want to go out he'd turn round and throw it on the floor so she'd put her tack away again. They had that arrangement for the last four or five years of his ridden life.
I took him out for a "light hack" once (aged about 26) and bumped into a 4 yo who'd only just started hacking out alone and true to character my friend's old boy decided this young whippersnapper needed to see how passage is done properly... while the 4yo walked calm and sensibly we bounced along behind him getting comments from passing walkers on how handsome he was and what a good dressage horse he would make... but if you took him into a school he'd do his best impression of a Thelwell pony!
Ever the character, he was part of the reason I ended up with Talin, and my friend was the one who told me about a lady called Kelly Marks who teaches Monty's methods in the UK.

Very touching and a very brave and heavy decision to make, hope your heart is not too heavy. I love the story of the saddle cloth. I wish all horses were given the choice to communicate like this, what a lucky horse he was.
