It would probably help if you didn't shake it out before you put it in the nets. I know that bale is tightly packed and it took a lot of shaking to separate it that probably made it worse. I've fed solid wedges before with no ill effects and the other advantage is that it might take them longer to eat it?

I took piriton this morning before going to the yard, and yep I stuffed complete wedges of hay into the nets and it was much better.
I tried goggles but it didn't work with the dust mask, every time I breathed out my breath went out the stop of the dust mask into the goggles and I couldn't see so gave up on the goggles pretty quickly. Might try glasses next time.

Masks and goggles/glasses don't work due to the steaming up problem as you've found out!!
Try smearing Vaseline on your nostrils to trap the dust/spores so you don't breathe them in.

I've only got about 1 and 1/4 of the big bales left then am onto small bales and am hoping they'll be better as a) they're new, and b) it's easier to put whole slices into nets without distrubing them so much

My doctor is allergic to hay, I can't handle it except to just lift sections anymore and I'm fairly sure that's what set off my double pneumonia last year. I've had repeated eye infections from it too. This year, I was filling nets and a bit off and according to the doctor halfway back to pneumonia. Stopped going around they hay and had a short dose of antibiotics and I'm fine. I keep an inhaler about these days too, just to open my airways. Do take care, it's toxic stuff if you have upper respitory weaknesses.
