Oh, no idea, something along the lines of once it was open then it became a breeding ground for germs and you don't want to smear germs into an open wound. Quite how the germs survived in the tube when it was full of anti germ chemicals is a mystery to me, I don't think they are against germ creams per se just the notion of contamination from multiple users. But it went out of fashion for first aid kits, certainly in the workplace, and I'm not sure if it ever returned? I haven't done a course in years, perhaps someone can expand? Someone asked the same question about using tea tree oil and lavender oil in a rollerball applicator - wouldn't you get cross infection? No, because the stuff kills all known germs!

I suspect (not certain though!) the reason you can't have savlon in work first aids kits is the same as paracetamol, first aiders are only trained to deliver first aid, i.e. keep someone breathing/ CPR/ stem blood flow then hand over to paramedics. The employer doesn't want to be responsible for someone dabbing savlon onto a serious injury only to find the patient is allergic to it, or it gets into their blood stream. It's got more to do with liability of employers than how useful it is. Any injury in a workplace which leaves the patient open to infection should be dealt with by a nurse or doctor, not a first aider, because then the employer has covered their ass

I have much the same as above. Things that have seen the most use: Plastic bowl, salt and cotton wool (to make saline solution to clean around wound, as advised by vet). Wound hydrogel - brilliant stuff for scrapes in places that can't be bandaged. It dries into sort of a second skin an keeps the flies off. A piece of paper listing normal temp, pulse and respiration - I can't be relied on to remember in an emergency.

feel the need to vouch to the extent of BJM's kit that we raided for Lola's abcess! Its immense, am sure it must have anything in there thats needed like that!
I don't actually have a great deal, just add to it as I get things to use (buy a spare for the kit)
Think having poultice kit, (animalintex, vetwrap, ducktape, nappies) is essential, plus a couple of spare bute, various wound creams (aloe vera, green oils, sudocream) and sedalin are essentials for me
