Hi, when i was 25 i had 4 teeth removed and full tramline braces. It cost me approx £500 but this was 22 years ago. I was a bit fed up because just as i paid i found i was pregnant and could have had it done for free! But although at the time it wasnt always very comfortable i would do it again and dont have any regrets. Hope it goes well for you! And no you are not mad

Has anyone else had or have braces...... any advise ?! Why? Because you need it done, or because you want it done?? If because you want it done.. then... it's all down to vanity isnt it? If it aint broke - don't fix it. Save your money for something else. If you need it done and your dentist recommends it, then can't you get help off the NHS??

I spent years as a kid having braces - firstly to allow a trapped adult tooth through and then to straighten them. I had beautifully straight teeth. Now at 35 my wisdom teeth are coming through and have pushed all my teeth forwards and they are back to been wonky like before I had braces when I was a child. I am quite gutted but don't think I would have braces as an adult again.
If it is what you really want then go for it.

As a teenager I had braces initially to allow some adult teeth through, then those were removed and the braces were supposed to move my teeth forward to close the gap at the front and allow space for my wisdom teeth. What actually happened was they pulled all my teeth over without moving the roots so when my wisdom teeth erupted they made teeth lean ever further forwards and so every time I bit down with my molars I has searing pain in my jaw which was my teeth effectively being pulled out. After a few months things settled again but I still had to have my wisdom teeth out which was horrendous.
Every month I went to the orthodontist to have my braces tightened and for three days after I'd have face ache and headaches constantly.
Personally unless I was already in pain I wouldn't voluntarily go through that again.

I have to agree with michellep. Although my experience was not half as bad as hers, I do remember the pain of the braces being tighted was horrible. So much so that even eating a yogurt would be painfull.

I don't think you're mad- I would have it done if I had the money. I had them as a child but still have a gap at the front and would love to have it fixed- and yes it is vanity but it really bothers me and if its going to make you feel better then its money well spent imo. Have you looked at the adult braces you can get call invisbraces- I was going to look into these - thought they might be a better option than having metal tramlines. www.invisalign.co.uk

I spent £2k on laser eye surgery, that's not that different. 20months is a long time to wear them but I was so glad not to have glasses and contact lenses on honeymoon.
It's your money, if it really bothers you go for it, but maybe ask about the pain / side effects stuff flagged above and get the most discreet you can afford for those 20 months.

I have invisalign braces at the moment. They are BRILLIANT!! No-one has noticed that I have them as you really can't see them at all. I have to change them every 2 weeks and it usually hurts a little for about 20 minutes after I change them. You have to take them out to eat and if I forget to put them back in and leave them out for more than a few hours then they hurt for about 10 minutes after that. They do take a bit of getting used to but other than that they are AMAZING!! I have them top and bottom and they cost about £2600 for the whole thing including initial consultation etc. They were my 30th birthday present to myself I've had them just over 10 weeks so far and can definitely see a difference in my teeth already. Feel free to pm if you have any other questions, but I would definitely recommend them!

My sister suffered wonky teeth for 30+ years and decided to have braces in her fifties - she wished she had done it sooner. Her dentist just said 'what is it with you women of a certain age?' - then ducked.

Chris Evans had braces on for months, and he thought it was worth it at aged 40+! Wish it had been suggested to me years ago - too late now - as my front teeth are getting further apart every year. Much as I love horses, it wasn't my plan to land up looking like one in my old age

Well, it’s never too late. I got my braces at 30 from dentist Redondo Beach. I am 33 now with a perfect set of teeth and a good smile. I laugh and smile more often now. You can of course get the braces, and get it from my dentist only, he’s quite affordable and good too.
