Blimey, thats brilliant, I've been trying to pluck up the courage to hack alone for years and am nowhere near it!
The one time we did go I was so nervous that Biggs was too she kept asking to turn round and was being uncharacteristically spooky, when I finally bottled out and turned for home she was so relieved she politely trotted me all the way back, stopped by the gate and waited for me to get off.
I've only been out with other horses and people on foot since and very happy she is about it. :-)

Well done indeed , if you still want to do endurance ask the ride entries sec if there is someone to ride with and explain your issues, they are normally very helpful and will pair you up with a safe "buddy". I know our club does and they do "taster" rides too to get you going and give you confidence.

I've just been on the endurance GB site (I used to ride out with Sport Endurance) but there are no rides in my area, and as my boy isn't the best traveler I can't really take him miles to get to anything.

First time I hacked my boy out on my own I dragged OH with me on foot, he knows nothing about horses and seems to exude an air of chilledness around them, he never thinks they’ll spook at stuff so they don’t pick anything up from him. Plus being my OH I can boss him around “darling, can you march past the field of ostriches like you mean it please so horse follows?” (yes, really a field of ostriches...) When we started going out on our own a tiny tot of dutch courage seemed to help the first couple of times.

Thought I would do another update. I haven't been out on my own since my last post. My boy hadn't been ridden for 2 weeks as he climbed over a fence to get to some nice grass and managed 2 cuts on his leg and on his side near where the saddle goes. He has been a menace in the field though and so as his cuts have mostly healed I decided to take him out on his own and put some of that excess energy to use taking him for a ride on his own yesterday.
I woke up at 2 in the morning stressing about the route I was taking him so decided to change the route and just do a circuit around the park. I wasn't actually too nervous, I was quite looking forward to it. I called him in the field and he came trotting up to me to be caught. He stood beautifully to be tacked up (even when someone came to ask me for directions) and to be mounted, then we were off. He had a bit of a paddy going out and we had a small buck but once we were off he was fine. We had some canters down the bridleways and and trotted/gaited pretty much everywhere else, he goes into extra speedy mode when he is on his own. I was worried he was doing a bit too much so did have to enforce walking at some points, but he seemed up for it and wasn't flagging. He would be such a good endurance horse if he would travel better and wasn't so stressy. We both got home in one piece, both very hot and sweaty, but we had lots of fun. I found myself planning other rides for us to do on our own!

I won't hack alone, My mum comes with me, she walks with me, but she walks a way back with the dog, so the dog doesn't spook Milly, and Milly doesn't stand on the dog.

I used to hack miles solo with my horse that i have had for 14 years (still have her but she is retired due to ligament problems) and will hack out our other veteren mare (but need help to get on her as she does not stand still unless someone stands near her) but i am worried about riding my youngster alone or even in the school - i live on a livery yard but all the others have been and gone by light and my husband leaves at 7am as well so cant ride at all unless someone is here which is mostly weekends. I can get on my youngster but can't hack out alone - all horses are different i suppose good luck with your confidence improving

Well done nags! I have bottled it a bit recently with solo hacking, as we had a 'discussion' last time about napping and spinning - I did get him going on, but it has dented me a little. Hey ho, I'll get back to it! We still love going out with others, and we can school alone, so we'll come back to hacking. Perhaps it was the fact I had pink wellies on that did it - far too unfashionable to be seen out with
