We've been hacking out the polo ponies most days. They love going out in the snow. We have access to the margins round the local farmer's fields so we don't have to contend with traffic and we are mostly walking but the horses aren't finding the ground a problem. They are all barefoot.

We are not going anywhere at the moment and haven't been out since the first heavy snow as the lane to our house has 6" deep ruts of ice. Very dangerous driving over it too and with the freezing temperatures it would be here for some time yet.

1st winter that we haven't managed to ride so far to be honest, usually the road outside defrosts enough for us to get up to the bridleways or down the lane to the fields but no way this yr so far as nothing has been able to get to us to grit at all. Ponies don't slip but cars do and i'm simply not risking lives.
Having said that, my small paddock is flat and covered in 6inches of snow so we may get a jog round that shortly otherwise my ponies will think they've been retired.............

No riding round here either - even the die hards who ride in lashing rain have not ventured out! I am going to tack up and scoot round one of our paddocks though - it's been empty for two months so should be OK to walk on for 10 minutes. I never thought I would hear myself saying that I can't wait to get back in the saddle, but I can't! Go away snow and ice!!!!
