In another thread I just read, someone said the Spanish don't let their mares grow their manes long... and I have pictures of my horses's dam (a hispano arab) and she has a hogged mane, when I saw that I wondered why...
Is it common? Is it just tradition or is there a reason for it?

I wonder if it's broodmares rather than all mares?

Hi.. They see mares in spain as breeding machines, and dont ride them. They hog all the show mares to show their head and neck conformation. Normal people like us in spain are the same as us, they keep them as pets/riding horses and dont hog them... It is just the breeding stock and the bloodline stuff they are going to show. Siena was hogged all her life before i had her from Madrid. Not only do they hog the manes but they hog the dock too. until 2 or 3. then they allow just the bottom part of the tail to grow. Its shows off powerful quarters and hock action. Its all about showing the muscles, skeleton, and movement. In this country a mare with a full mane can win the movement classes at the shows, but it is deemed incorrect in Spain. Thats my understanding of it anyway. Someone else may know more. C x

This is my lad's mum - the hispano arab. I have another picture of her being ridden with her mane hogged but can't post it as I don't have the rider's permission. The picture I have of her with foal at foot actually shows she has a longer mane. Attachments:

Sorry, Nestle i don't really agree with your comment about the Spanish see the mares as breeding machines.. I do agree some people do, But please don't tie ALL the spanish with the same brush!!!!
My yard manager who is Spanish never see's any of her horses as machines..

I was told by the owner of a lot of Andalucian horses that she imported it was because they got little biting fly type lice that burrowed in their manes and tails and it was to get rid of them. It did not make sense at the time as I thought they have nothing to swish them off with.

I found him in the UK, he was imported by a dealer when he was 3, I got him a year ago when he was 5.5.
I have to agree with Pip, the lady who bred my boy seemed to really care for her horses. Google translate is only so good but from her website I'd say she follows natural horsemanship principles.

I am always telling my Y/M that she is NOT Spanish..... The way she is with her horses makes me feel proud to have Harly on her yard....
Some Spanish people do make me cringe though with how i see them treating there horses or any other animal for that matter.... In the summer the road's are full of dog's & cats which have just be kicked out onto the street as the silly people go away & can't be bothered with putting them into a kennel's or cattery, that is how the yard where my horse is at has 6 dog's & 8 cats....

Pipharrison, if you read the post it tried to explain why the spanish hog the mares. or my understanding of it. It also says that the normal people, like us do not do this, and they have them as riding horses and pets as we do.
