After going to see 3 horses that were 3+ hours away and despite asking all the questions I could over the phone and were nothing like as described I put a 1 1/2 hr drive limit on my search area. However if there was a horse a long way away that seems to be what I was looking for I would have gone to see it if I had had someone that could have a look before I travelled so that I at least knew that it would be more or less as it was advertised.

Surely a lot depends on what you want the horse for. With both of mine it was a case of low expectations and basic requirements. I did not want to be overhorsed, and was happy to do whatever the horse turned out to be suitable for. I decided that the closer they were, the more likely I would be to get honest answers, as I'd come back & make a fuss, and in both cases I asked for permission to approach the vet for details. Also, I asked other people on the same yard what they knew. Worked well for me.
