Hi All,
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you who so kindly gave advise on finding a riding yard.
I have managed to find a very special yard called Holistic Equitation in Preston Capes. It’s situated between Banbury and Northamptonshire. It’s an hour drive from where I live but is well worth it.
I have never experienced a yard like it before and I have been to a few!
I was very surprised when I went to have a look around at how peaceful and relaxing the yard was. You probably could have heard a pin drop. It was almost like you’d left your busy week behind you on entering the yard.
I was met with a warm welcome. Derek and Jo kindly offered to show me around. I met most of the horses who I felt were happy and contented. I didn’t feel nervous of them, which is unusual. Although I love horses and feel very drawn to them, I don’t feel confident around horses I don’t know. This was a completely different experience.
I have to say I did take up quite a bit of their time but didn’t feel like I was in the way or holding them up.
I had a quick introductory lesson with Derek and Charlie (Derek’s horse) and learned a little about their style of teaching and the history behind it. Their way of teaching comes from the French Principle of lightness. Basically riding with no tension and very light use of aids. It’s amazing how little you need to use your aids, when used correctly. It's a much pleasant why of riding for the horse and yourself. It’s not just a riding lesson but an education.
I’ve only had a few lessons there but already I have a clearer idea and understanding why I had riding hick-ups in the past.
It makes a lot of sense and hopefully it will provide me with a good understanding of the horses perception and will make me a better horse person for the future.
I just wanted to share this little gem with you.
We all want to ride and be happy. Most of all we want to know and feel that our horses are happy too.
Anyway enough of my waffle. Why not give it ago!
Details are below if any of you are interested.
