Sue’s Standpoint
For Christmas I was given a small book, ‘One Hundred Ways To Live With A Horse Addict’ by Tina Bettison, and was dismayed (but amused!) to find that far too many of the humourous comments were true! They made me smile (almost as much as watching ‘Racing Stripes’ on Boxing Day!), so I thought I’d share a couple here with you:
“If you mention top hat and tails, she assumes you are a Grand Prix dressage rider rather than best man at a wedding or a contender on Strictly Come Dancing.”
“She usually has a dog (Jack Russells, Spaniels and Labradors are favourites), that she can’t control but is very cute. If the dog’s winter rug matches the horse’s, you know you have more than an addict on your hands.”
“She will also have the entire series of Thelwell’s cartoons and all the books by the Pullein-Thompson sisters. She may even still read them!”
Helpful Hints from Holistic Horse Help
Crazy about Clipping (or not!)
This is a seasonal question that, looking at some popular online horse forums, seems to be occupying quite a few people at the moment!
If your horse is not sure about being clipped, make sure you take the time to desensitise him to both the noise and the feel of the clippers. Incremental learning means pushing the boundaries just a little at a time, gradually building his confidence. If he’s still struggling, try smaller clippers, or a hairdryer, or an electric toothbrush, to allow him to realise that noise and vibration doesn’t have to be something to be scared of. Use positive reinforcement to help him associate the clippers with something he enjoys. Clip ‘with the hair’ rather than ‘against the hair’ to begin with if necessary, to help him become comfortable with the strange sensations. Take the time it takes for him to accept that the clippers are not going to hurt him.

Real life stories
Tell me a story! If you’d like your horse to be featured in this section, as an inspiration and support to others who may be struggling with similar issues (you can remain anonymous if preferred!), drop me an email to sue@holistichorsehelp.com.
Leanne called me for help with getting on her new horse, Manuel. We knew that Manuel was safe to ride because Leanne had seen him ridden, when the rider was given a leg up. Trouble was, Leanne didn’t generally have anyone around to give her a leg up, and besides, she wasn’t keen on the speed that he might move off at! After a quick check of Manuel’s back for pain-related issues, Leanne and I got to work to help him to realise that having a human stand next to him on a mounting block or put their foot in the stirrup wasn’t the terrifying experience he was expecting! We worked for an hour or so, I left Leanne with some ‘homework’ to be going on with… and was very pleased to receive this email a while later!
“Hi Sue, just got back from the field and am buzzing with excitement – I got on Manuel for the first time!! He was as good as gold and didn’t flinch once! Am so proud of him. Thanks again for the help and advice… now the real journey begins.”
