The nearest estimate I can manage is to compare cannon bone lengths - if you can find a adult horse with the same length cannon bone that is probably the size she will be when she is mature. It isn't infallible though, you do need to look at type as well.

As a very rough guide Jodie, foals do 90% of their growing in the first year. It will be much easier to predict her height as a yearling, but if he is 12hh now, I think she will be a little bigger than Mum but not by far - I have a six month Pure Connie colt and he is around the same height now, maybe a little smaller but he is bum high at the mo!. He will be 14.2hh. Hope this is what you wanted! She looks a lovely little filly , whats the story? Was she a BOGOF?

Usually they will grow one hand bigger than they are at their 1st birthday. Unless they are in poor condition at 1 then they may grow bigger. My cob was 12hh at 1 and very poor, he is now 15 1 All my other foals have only grown about a hand after their 1st birthday. Cute baby

Hi Sarahbing,
She was a bogof foal, i bought my mare last November and found out in April - May
Im gonna keep her as I can guarantee her a good home!!! It will be a steep learning curve for us both but i have enlisted the help of Lizp to keep us on track!
I hope that she make at least 14.1 14.2.

i have always found that after their first birthday they grow another 2 hands so i would extimate luna to be around 14.1 to 14.2

In the book 'Horse Nutrition and Feeding' by Sarah Pilliner there is a table of percentages of height at 6 months, 12 months and 18 months to adult height. Sadly it doesn't mention cobs! however according to this TBs and Arabs have attained 84% of mature height at 6 months, Anglo-arabs 83%, and Shetlands 86%.
At the time I read this, I had a 6 month old Sec D colt standing 13 hands - I worked out using 85%, I think, that he'd make 15.2hh which was exactly right, as it turned out.
So, if 12 hands is 85%..... I make that 14.1...?

Took a better picture today of Luna and Twinkle, I think the cannon bones are nearly the same lenght so im guessing she will be the same size as mum?

She is a sweetie, and so good to hear she has home. It is a steep learning curve and a huge responsibility as we know that any 'quirks' are down to us and can't be blamed on previous owners! It is also hugely rewarding and great fun and with Liz's help you will have a fabulous horse. Lovely to see her and would love to hear how you get on x

Is there not something about measuring from fetlock or floor to their wither then taking that measurement with string and then use the bit of string from the knee up and that should give you approx measurement I can't quite remember as its been so long since I did it.
