to your yard?
I am looking to move my horses (again) as the one I am on does not have enough turnout. In 24/7 in bad weather and if the do go out its for about 2hrs.
I have possibly found a yard with unlimited turnout (its on 1000acres) and 2 indoor schools, but, they don't offer any services and its an hour away from work (1/2hr from home). Just wondered how many people travel a far distance to see their beloved animals ;D

I'm very lucky in that my yard is only a 10-15 minute drive away and halfway to work so can always pop down in my lunch breaks if needed but I have had horses on loan where Ive had to drive 40 mins in the wrong direction to see them (and we wonder why people call us mad)
If the yard is perfect for you then it makes the drive worthwhile

Hi That is quite far to travel, but worth it for the turnout I would think, maybe you could find someone to take it in turns with and help out each other so you don't have to go twice a day everyday? I am lucky in that mine live at home with me, but they haven't always and I didnt' used to want to keep them more than 20 mins from home in case I had to get there pronto in an emergency etc. That said, 1000 acres probably means you could get some lovely hacks in around the farm, that is just huge!!!!!

10 mins (it's about 4.5 miles). I've always said that I'd want to be no more than 20 mins away in case of emergency.

1 minute in the car and about 3 mins to walk. There are some things I'm not keen on about the yard but in the seven years I've been there the horses have had turnout every single day. I can also ride over the rested fields which is a huge bonus as the roads in my area are very busy.
I know I'm very lucky to have the yard so close to home and can see my horse from my bedroom window when he's grazing in certain fields.

Mine are at my mums, I'm there all day everyday, it takes me 35 minutes each way and it's pretty hard going if I'm honest. There was a emergency and I admit I put my foot down and made it there in just over 25 minutes. But it was very stressful! Mum is hoping to move closer soon so that should help. Personally if I couldn't keep them with family, they wouldn't be that far away.

10 mins (it's about 4.5 miles). I've always said that I'd want to be no more than 20 mins away in case of emergency. My 'self-imposed' limit for DIY is about 5 miles - on the basis if dire things happened, that is jsut about walkable, and certainly cycle-able. Three winters ago, my car battery failed every time the temps got below 0 and it was over Christmas so I couldn't get it fixed for a week - I had to cycle to the yard a few times over that period!! Also when my old girl had colic it was invaluable being so close and being able to pop up to the yard three or four times over the night. Currently, I am 2 miles away, takes about 5 mins to drive. Not a nice road to walk ro cycle along, but do-able in an emergency. It's 17 miles from work tho (kind of on the way from home to work so in the summer when they are out 24/7 I often do the morning 'have they still got four legs' check on the way to work, and then ride in the evenings.) I think it's different if you are on a yard where there are staff you can call on in an emergency, but I have always been on solely DIY yards.

I was on a yard that was less than a mile away, but same as you - no turnout in the winter.
I moved earlier this year to a yard 12 miles away, that basically lets me do what I want with Snip. Also no services offered, total DIY - but I have a good friend who I do 'swaps' with for helping out with stuff....gives us both a lie in sometimes and means that Snip is never left alone.

I travel 8 miles- 20 minutes in the car - and have got used to it now. The riding is so much better out there that there is no way I'd have them closer to home.

One of my liveries has just moved back to me after the move- she travels just over 100 miles! as despite nice yard and turnout just near to her home- they wern't feeding enough hay and water!!!!!and elderly Tb was losing weight FAST. she has an ensuite room here if she wants to stay over and she makes a mini holiday for 100% horse therapy once a week or a longer stay once a fortnight!!

16 miles round trip.
However, Ky is on loan and part of the agreement is that she stays at owner yard - Ky's owner owns the yard and lives on site so there's always someone on site for emergencies.
However my neighbours keep their horses in a field next door to my house - I'd love it if i could bring Ky home - what a dream to wake up every morning and see her beautiful face!
