I'm going through almost a bale per day. Huge amount for two exmoors. I'm just glad there's sh*tloads of haylage for sale over the road!!

I've used nearly 1 big bale since my big bales arrived yesterday That's with 4 (Shambar is still on the small bales) - but I don't mind, I'd rather they were eating plenty so I know they're warm enough.

We're doing 12 bales a day at the moment, but that's between 24 horses so I guess it isn't that bad!

I'm sort of the other way round. I have not had to feed hay at all yet. They are out on the field that should have been cut for hay if we had had any summer to do it! They have plenty of grass and are doing fine on that and a supplemental bucket once a day. However yesterday we were having warnings of 10 inches of snow on high ground in this area today ( we have not had much so far). Our hay & haylage was meant to be delivered this morning but the suppliers mother died in the night so it didn't come. So I went and bought 2 bales (normal size) getting hay bits in my newish car, stuffed 6 haynets and tied them to the fence in the paddock next to the field and asked the landowner who lives on site and keeps an eye on things to open the gate and let the horses through to the paddock if we have a bad fall of snow. If we have heavy snow I'll not be able to get up there anyway. So after that effort all morning, what did we get? Rain, rain and more rain! I doubt we'll get snow at all even though there is snow in Mold and Chirk, but it's too warm here.

The heard are out ... munching on local farmers best hayledge... absolutely gorgeous stuff... he made 2 acres of the stuff... and then it'll be hay... it's -6°C during the day in the sun here ... heaven knows what it is during the night..
We've not had any serious snow since last Wed ... but still have a foot on the ground which isn't going anywhere when the temp is so low...
water at the farm is completely frozen.. am importing water from home at mo... luckily they have a burn at the bottom of their fields..
The steading is sooooooooooo cold am sure horses would be colder in that they are out..

In the mares field alone 5 ponies are getting through a large round bale every 2 days! Same number or geldings are getting through theirs in roughly a week. YO is going mad at the mares and we can't understand why the difference, the grass is of good quality and available so very odd.

I reckon you need a haybale cover (Like a HUGE haynet) but only suitable for those that are unshod.... Certainly would ensure more even trickle feeding, than gorging on all that free hay.... Or make a hay bale container with 1 inch square mesh cover which is attached by elasticated clips to each corner, thus enabling the mesh to move down as they hay gets eaten. I want my husband to make one of these for me

Mine are all having extra hay night and morning. They are out 24/7 and don`t always choose to go in their shelters when the weather is bad, so I need to know they have good central heating.

Mine are stabled at night and yarded during the day,if its not too icy. I am using a big bale of haylage in 5 days between 3 14.2hh -15.2hh horses and a shetland. The sheep are eating 3 small bales a day as well. They have lots of grass under the snow and usually dont eat hay unless they are starving but the racks are empty every day.
