The roads around here are lethal - poor Husband stuck in the same spot in Basingstoke for about 3 + hours now with no sign of movement. Took me 45 mins to get back from work - a simple four mile journey. Worst of all I can't make the 7 mile trip to the yard. YO is going to give them hay - Chance is ok as she lives out but poor Scarlet is on box rest and will be spending the night in a dirty stable, with only hay - no feed as I didn't make it up and my bins are locked - couldn't ask non horsey YO to do a snack ball ... Its just one night but I feel so guilty...

Aw, don't feel bad, it can't be helped, and better Scarlet does without her mum for one night, than you have an accident. As long as they get their hay they'll be fine, don't fret.

you have done your best, i know in the awful weather of Feb this year we couldnt get 2 yard, and we had 2 stabled, and the YO was lovely and did a quick muck out and gave them hay for us. if they had been out they wud have been very hungry and cold. Hay will fill her tum and im sure she has company all around her. As alex said best that you are safe, and can go when the ice/snow is better, than risking having a big accident!

I can't get to see mine either, have only got a push bike and they are three miles away and it's pitch black and so slippery. I think they'll be OK as they have loads of shelter and bushes they can eat.
feel terrible though :<

I have a 24mile round trip to do mine. By sheer luck/skill/miracle, I have got there once a day, so far, but have been giving them an 'all you can eat' hay buffet with probably wayyyy too much Hi-Fi lite. Thankfully Chloe is breathing holes in one trough, but I'm onto water containers to top it up. Not willing to do two trips at the moment, as they're up a steep lane and it's seriously dangerous going! I've had to cancel the farrier twice, too!

My journey is a 24 mile round trip too. Luckily most of it is A1, but I have to get out of my small village, with hilly winding roads, and then into the yards tiny village with hilly winding roads! The middle bit is fine but either end is a bit hairy!
I've done pretty well so far, I span the car yesterday.....first time it's happened. Was crawling along but must have hit a patch of ice at the wrong angle and I did 2 full rotations. I was going so slowly that it did no damage.
I guess I'm lucky, my car is a company car so if I damage it there is no cost to me, I might be a bit less willing to try if it were my own pocket paying for any potential repairs!!!

Got down this morning (lovely OH who got home at 1am drove me) they were both ok - a little hungry but at least they were pleased to see me! Gave extra hay and water just in case! I haven't gone into work yet and as am only temping this will be highly frowned upon but driving in these conditions scares me to death. I know the car can cope - but my driving skills don't compare to the cars ability and the roads are littered with dumped cars where people have just given up and walked home. feeling bad about work - but hey if I am not there I don't get paid so they can't moan to much! mmmm....

I didn't manage to get to the yard last night either. It took me 1½ hours to do 3 miles in order to get home and most of that was pretty hairy as my car is not the best in the snow.
This morning I had to walk to work as I couldn't get it out of the driveway. So I doubt I will be down the yard tonight either.
Luckily my horse is on part-livery and the owner lives on site, so as a mininum he will get fed, watered and skipped out, even if the other staff don't manage to get to work. The only problem is that he is not getting out of his box for any exercise as it is too dangerous to turn out, the walker isn't working and the school is snowed in. Hopefully a friend will be able to walk him round the yard a little bit today just so he can stretch his legs if I can't get up today.
I just cannot believe that the Council has not been out gritting the roads, there is absolutely no evidence of any gritting in Bracknell, Windsor (where my horse is) seems a bit better, but not by much. My Mum lives in Lincolnshire, and she says that all the roads are clear and the pavements have been thoroughly gritted.
The forecast said it is going to continue being cold, -6 tonight!!! But hopefully no more snow.

We're not too bad where we are but the last mile out to the yard is interesting - I'm glad I have 4WD on both my cars! The main road to the yard (bar the last mile) had finally been gritted this morning - bit late as there was no sign of gritters after it had snowed then frozen Shambar is not impressed, he thinks the slave is not doing her job properly and I should be out there with heaters thawing out his field (and giving him 2nd, 3rd and 4th breakfast). My mares couldn't care less as long as they get hay

I'm having the same problem - the roads around my house are pure ice - I can't even walk to the car without falling over. I've tried calling yard but as everyone has yesterday and today off I don't think i'm going to get anyone. Ky was fed hay this morn and will get some around 5pm from YO but I can't get up to give her her feed. Am soooo worried........
