Someone enlighten me as to why people still use this method to control a horse that may take off Because it is a quicker and easier "solution" than actually bothering to re-school/check back, teeth, saddle etc. It is difficult to believe we are living in the 21st century sometimes isn't it?

Is that why they tie tongues?? Is this as in Racing to stop the horse getting his tongue over the bit or some other reason? How is tying down the tongue supposed to stop them tanking off?

I only heard today thats its done in racing, the person i was talking to drives and rides cobs but then he is one of those 'tie its head to its foot type' and leave a foal tied to a gate for 4 hours to get it used to being tied up. Problem is, he 100 % believes his methods are correct

Thought that tying up tongues were to prevent the horse swallowing its tongue when exterting itself (so the tongue doesn't fall back and block the airways).. Never heard of it being used to stop a horse tanking/taking off !!

I have only met it in racing where it is done on some horses to stop them "swallowing" their tongue. It has to be inspected by a vet in the parade ring before the race.

interesting article. This man definatley said when his driving cobs play up, he ties the tongue to the bottom jaw (probably with bailer twine ) to make them behave.

That is totally out of order and will undoubtably cause bigger problems in the long run. What a nasty man.

Well to be fair, I think that grabbing the tongue and pulling it out the side of the mouth is more to encourage the horse to keep his mouth open to allow for an examinaion, than an actual method of restraint.
Ear twitching I don't like, but for me the jury is still out on top lip twitching, as there are varying degrees of lip twitching.

Apparently - & I am open to correction - holding the tongue out of the side of the mouth, however gently, is no longer acceptable. It can cause damage to the soft tissue my horse-dentist says, so a gag should be used if the mouth is to be kept open. I would have thought that anyone with knowledge of a specific person using inhumane practices, should report what they know to BHS welfare or WHW (ILPH) to look into
