Ollie has a long mane currently he has always had it pulled in the past but hates it. He has had 3 years off due to injury but is back on the mend and going well. I want to start competing him. Ollie is Irish Draught cross with TB but does look a little spanish!
Olllie does suit his long mane but I've always plaited and had pulled manes. I'll cut it for him if he makes it back to the show ring. But I think he'll be doing SJ and Dressage to start with.
I won't pull it because he needs to be twitched and he'll crush anyone that tries to twitch him since his injury at a livery yard (they twitched him everytime they dealt with his leg).
Should he keep his mane and look a little spanish or should the thinning scissors come out?

Aesthetics keep it long, twitch to pull definitely keep it long, plaiting try bigger plaits or buy a Solo comb and keep it long. That's: long 3 : short 0

I prefer mine with short manes, but thats just what suits them. If long suits Ollie I would leave it long and maybe tidy it up with a solo comb if you go jumping etc, totally agree pulling is not an option and have not pulled a mane since they bought out the solo comb

Just do it with a solo comb or tail knife. My Sec A won't have her mane pulled but she's chestnut and looks like Linda off Gimme Gimme Gimme so got to have it thinned and shortened.

TBH his mane looks manageable. have you tried plaiting up to see how they look? it depends how far you want to go with him when you think of turnout. obviously if you are competitive and want him to look the best he can then you have to make that decision and have him looking the best he possibly can. which will mean a short, plaited mane. your decision.

I like the natural look but the hair has to get to a certain length before it looks natural if that makes sense Hanging just below the neck I think you lovely horse would look lovely with about 3 more inches

for sj you can leave it and for local dressage just plait it in a running arab plait. As long as he's clean and tidy (perhaps neaten up the ends) then nobody should object.

Partial to the natural longer look - you still have plenty options for hair up or hair down that way

I like long as long as it doesn't look scraggy and is all one length. He suits the length in the second pic, although those spikey bits need to catch up!! I've not cut Conn's mane in 5 years and don't intend to start - he's native so can get away with it un plaited but if I want to look smarter for low key shows or if it's really hot weather I do a running plait in it which looks nice.
